[The Deep] With Strange Aeons

Post by Jabonicus »

”Among all fascinations is the method in which we decide how the world functions.
As you stand upon your dirt you must realize the truth of passing sun.
An hour cannot decide a day, nor a day for its week.
You see an inch and try to presume a mile.
Can you explore the ocean in a puddle?
Does the secret of your mountains remain only in their peaks?
You think too small because you cannot look further.
You lay in your cradle and, looking at your mobile, declare it the stars.
Where are you?
Where are you?
Where are you?”
Even as the IC Aphelion shot through the warp of space, the signal blared to its crowd. It was the inspiration for far more than some believed it held credit to. Endless hours of theories and videos dissecting its possible influences and the history of similar events filled media sites on the holo-net of every kind. From the Alliance to Kowloon systems, if someone enjoyed a mystery, then they had heard of the signal.

The IC Aphelion was a transport ship, though what it transported was obviously something that changed frequently. It’s three floors in its primary pod mainly consisting of easily recognizable compartments that could shift and change to accommodate any good deal of cargo. The cargo of the day was, due to the hunt for the signal, a number of people. Barracks were neatly collected near the front of the ship, along with the showers and toiletries. The chow hall sat near the middle, and their gear lockers sat against the large cargo bay that boasted a large, heavy ramp that was held in place by numerous clamps and mechanical arms.

The engines jutted out the back on two sides, causing the overall shape of the ship to mimic some bottom-heavy ‘V’, with an even more lopsided side view. The ship was sparse on windows, instead using cameras paired with shifting screens on the inside of the hull to allow for its inhabitants to look outside when they felt the need. They were still in the shifting winds of space, little else but fading stars in sight, their destination a good distance away still.

The crew of the ship was small and mostly kept to themselves. As it stood, they were being paid by the pilot to operate the largely custom ship, which otherwise lacked a more permanent crew during such expeditions. The captain of the ship was an odd human woman, standing no more than 5’5 with a fit frame, light brown skin, and purely mechanical, advanced cybernetic legs that connected to flesh just above her knees. Her skin, of what was visible, seemed to be heavily adorned and patterned with far too many neat and proper surgery scars.

She stood in the cargo bay, looking at a slurry of digital information on a thin tablet fastened to the wall. The radio signal played idly in the background as it changed from odd metaphors and ramblings of uncertain topics to music, that seemed to be an odd mixture of randomly generated and pulled from ancient radio waves of the past. Her clothes were warm, durable, a dark base with bright color that flashed in darkness. “Planetfall in twenty.” She called out, her voice amplified from her suit to ring through the ship.

“Planet is a long string of scientific nonsense on the maps, so we’re calling it Aker. Heavy rainfall on roughly seventy-percent of the surface in our scans, with an ambient temperature sitting at about negative-five degrees celsius” They had shot a probe near their landing sight to get a good idea of what they were running into as soon as they had a decent shot several hours ago. “Planet’s going to be dark, rocky, but there’s definitely some artificial structures.” The scans couldn’t tell her much about them, but scanning buildings wasn’t what they were designed to do.

The image that stared back at her was slanted up at the grim sky of the planet. A thick smothering sheet of rainclouds blocked out the horizon, keeping stars a distant memory from the dark red grass that covered the dirt and rocks around the probes impact site. Though the plants seemed to be greedy in their drinking, the lack of plantlife around the small impact crater had already half-submerged the probe in the scarce hours of runoff it had been down there.

“Assemble in cargo bay when ready, final gear check approaching, and let’s go ahead and get introductions out the way.” For a majority of the crew, they had not been picked up at the same time or place. The ship had practically played hopscotch across borders and planets to find its crew, and the briefs and gear checks of those who natively worked the vessel had done more than their part in keeping the team from saying much to each other. “I’m your Captain, you can just call me Chance.”

Part of the boarding procedure in getting everyone up to speed was not only running them through what the NovaLine signal was and why people wanted it dug out, but to equip them with anything they would have been lacking. A radio set, for example, was handed out to everyone, all tuned to one another in private channels as well as a group function, and then a team function that included everyone present. Provisions and food were provided as well.

Prying her eyes from the shuttered camera image from the probe, she turned to the staging area of her cargo bay, amber eyes staring out from surgical scarred eyelids.

It was mere minutes after the captain's announcement that a slender figure strode into the cargo bay shrouded in a long, black cloak that extended down to the ankles with a red stripe running horizontally across it at shoulder-level. The delicate, yet powerfully muscled creature was a member of the I'ee family called Thi-Thi: A female warrior with a body that was uniquely humanoid among her insectoid species to the point where one could be forgiven for mistaking her as a different species altogether. Her features were distinctly wasp-like, with an abdomen that protruded out of a split in the rear of her cloak, protected by a layer of light-weight plate mail. Her face was completely inhuman, with serrated mandibles, antennae and large compound eyes. Her body, fittingly enough, had a pronounced wasp-waist, adding a fair amount of emphasis to her hips and muscular thighs of which the occasional glimpse was afforded as her cloak flowed with her movements.

Besides her cloak, gleaming with a waxy, water-proof coat, she wore little-to-no clothing. A belt was worn around her waist, carrying a thin blade reminiscent of a rapier on her right and a holster carrying a side-arm on her left. A bandolier was slung over her left shoulder, passing over her... 'effeminate' chest, laden with her radio and other essential materials for their planetside excursions. She also wore an odd, wide-brimmed hat of firm material whose brim was shaped to provide room for her antennae, its purpose seemingly to keep the rain off of her eyes more than anything else.

She found a place to stand in the staging area and stood in silence, completely still with her right hand resting on the hilt of her blade and her left grasping the hem of her cloak. Her lower pair of smaller arms were folded. There she waited, her yellow and black exoskeleton gleaming in the light.

Explosions shook the ship as alarms wailed, and in an instant later, boarding craft bored through its hull, pirates streaming in before the smoke even cleared. Through the chaos, their leader strode in from the darkness, the choking clouds moving aside to make way for her majesty. Scantily clad in contempt of danger, a sword and pistol by her side, the Space Pirate Queen laughed as the passengers all burned. Only, it was not meant to be. The tall, muscular woman lay sleeping in her little corner of the ship, sweetly dreaming of all the nasty things she'd do to ships and passengers, looting their booty and all sorts of other acts of delightful debauchery. But in truth, the busty blonde looked like she had seen better days. Eyes dark and baggy as she snored, her neck length hair was a rumpled mess, and on top of that, she was clad in a dirty tracksuit rather than her usual scandalously regal attire. One had to wonder just what happened to the Space Pirate Queen. In truth though?

They only had to wait.

"PAPERS PLEASE!" she woke up screaming. Chest heaving, eyes darting back and forward in a panic, Ylfa let out a sigh as she realized where she was, cupping her face in her hands. "Right. I'm on vacation. No more paperwork," Ylfa muttered to herself. Eyeballing the activity, she soon got up as she realized they were departing. Tossing on a backpack, she looked like a casual hiker, nevermind the old-school slug thrower and cutlass on her hips. Looking around at the rest of the crowd that gathered, her eyes widened in surprise. "Holy shit, a bug with tits!" Already, her vacation was off to a great start. "You're one of those Thi-Thi right? The super-battle warrior types? Is your carapace armored?" Scooting closer, eyes wide and voice low with seriousness, she added, "Can I touch 'em?"

In one of the many bunks of the ship barrics a older man sit on the edge talking to a red demon girl over his wrist pda he talked in a raspy voice muffled slightly from a gas mask seemingly affixed to his lower face. His other arm gleamed in the rooms lighting as his arm was entirely mechanical with scars leading from the robotic appendage to his shoulder. He carries himself like a old vet his hair cleanly shaven his boots shined and his old laser rifle kept in working order.

As he looked up as the captain gave his announcement he gave a raspy sigh, "Okay kiddo I gotta go I'll take pictures if I can, tell your dad I said hi." The peppy response on the other end returned his statement with "Okay Sam be careful out there." Hanging up he fastens his bandoleer and strapped his rifle to his back checking his utility pouch before putting on his vest and making his way to the staging area.

Upon seeing the bug like creature he chuckled "Well hey there little fella, your quite a interesting creature." he said threw his mask.

In a corner of the cargo bay stood a tall tortoise Jongwu. Its bald head was covered in green-scaled skin and the top had two small horn-like protuberances. It had two small holes on the side of its head for ears, close-set grey eyes, two small holes for a nose, and a very human mouth. It wore a black shirt that read "Xiao Occult Investigations" in big white Taianese characters, an unzipped yellow waterproof hoodie, waterproof jeans, and heavy brown boots, all of it insulated.

The tortoise person pulled out a smartphone and started recording itself. "This is OcculTurtle bringing you a quick update on the NovaLine. I'm talking to you from the IC Aphelion. As you know we're heading out, looking for the source of the signal. Well, you won't believe what just happened, Turtlesquad. IT SPOKE TO US DIRECTLY. I shit you not people. And it said something that almost made me think twice about this expedition. It said, "I found you." Anyway, Captain Chance says we're heading out soon. I'll keep you updated. Remember to like and subscribe guys!" It said in a deep, masculine voice. It tapped a button on the screen and slid the device back into its jacket.

Turning to the others he stepped to the front of the group. "Might as well introduce myself. If you follow the NovaLine you might know me from my channel, OcculTurtle. My name is Claude Xiao, I'm a male tortoise Jongwu." He said, waving. "I'm also a paranormal/occult investigator so I'm used to seeing weird shit. I've studied the tatya hini, what little they would teach me, and I know a bit about the Yazata and Angels."

Claude walked back to the group and stood beside the humanoid wasp. He looked at the girl who seemed fascinated with insect breasts disapprovingly. Such behavior in public was highly inappropriate.

Hope's heels clicked cheerfully across the metal deck plate as she made her way to the cargo bay. She whistled happily as three round matte black drones floated around her. Her sapphire eyes glittered and her thick, dark brown hair was glossy and soft in the dim light. "Hello everyone!" She called out as she approached the group, her radio clipped to a sturdy belt on her hip. She wore Interstellar Alliance Marine Surplus pants with tastefully heeled black combat boots with a clean white long sleeve shirt under a sturdy dark brown vest. She beamed at Claude and the Wasp as she waves off her camera drones to not get into anyone's face. A flesh colored ear piece was nestled in her right ear obvious with her hair tucked back behind the slightly pointed ear.

"How is everyone doing today? Isn't this exciting?" She rocked on her heels, still smiling as she lined up with the others.

Coming from somewhere in the ship, a small ambiguous figure, known as Marble, comes forth into the cargo bay. Marble has the slim physique of a young child, akin to a skinny 12 year old. A clear white attire adorns Marble. A plastic-looking hooded-poncho covers Marble from head to knees. A solid white-face, showing no features (no eye-slots, mouthpiece, etc), is worn by Marble, both smooth and spotless of any dirt. The only differentiating colour from white is a bright red-cross on Marble’s right chest and left arm. Lastly, Marble had white boots, gloves, and pants. Besides from Marble is a large floating white spherical object providing company, likely a drone. A white backpack, fitting for the size of Marble, is seen on the back of Marble, square in shape. A big red-cross is imprinted on the front-side of the backpack.

Marble mainly keeps to itself, occasionally looking at Diadottr and Thi-Thi from time to time. Marble hums a tone, a high-pitched voice but bordering no-where near either female or male. Who knows.

The I'ee remained as still as a statue as the pirate lady scooted up to her, excited like a child. Almost as still as a statue. Her head turned ever so slightly and tilted to peer down at the human, listening to her rapid fire questions, then answering each of them in a cool voice; feminine, yet deep and commanding. "Yes, I am," she spoke. "Yes. Yes. Yes, it is." That final question drew a long pause from the Thi-Thi warrior.

"...No," Gut-Stripe finally answered, her tone unchanged.

The subsequent approach of Sam drew the I'ee's attention away from Ylfa, turning her head to gaze with the same impassiveness (though that was probably because her face was inhuman and almost inexpressive). "Human," she replied, her tone indicating acknowledgement of his greeting. Inwardly, she was a little baffled at all the attention she was receiving. It wasn't exactly unwelcome, but she didn't understand it.

"Reaaaally?" Ylfa began to reply, the hints of a viciously sly smile on her lips. Eyes sharp as a hawk, she quickly took note of how others were gravitating over as well. Some mercenary duder, a tiny kid in the back, but most importantly, the woman with the camera drones and the Jongwu blogger. "What if I let you touch my chest, in exchange for touching yours? It would be a fair trade, right?" she offered the strange warrior I'ee with a cocky grin.

Cameras were rolling, and any publicity for herself and her pirates was good publicity!

"Mostly human" Sam said with a chuckle before taking out a ration bar from the pouches on his right leg. Offering one to the I'ee. "Want one? It's oats and honey flavored." Looking to the pirate lass next he asked "So I'm guessing your one of them ass pirates kids these days talk about?" Before a slightly annoyed expression crossed his face breifly at the novaliner

Shaking his head he asked the captain in his raspy voice "so when did we start allowing children on ops?"

Of course he had no idea if marble was a kid but he did seem strange.... stranger than the chest mounded wasp woman. Or the woman hell refer to as 'pirate lass' due to her Cutlass and rather outdated slugthrower.

“My name is Marble. I’ll be your nurse and therapist for the trip.” A female robotic voice echoes from Marbe. Marble places his backpack on the floor, opening it. Marble reaches into her backpack, pulling out a camera. Marble then adjusts the position of the camera before taking a couple of photos. Bright-flashes of light is seen before quickly disappearing. Marble moves herself to a different spot before taking another round of photos. Standing in his spot, Marble looks through her images he taken. “I really like your outfit, Diadottr. It’s cute. I'll add it to my collection of dresses.” Marble comments. “Also, Thi-Thi. Your features and kind are highly interesting to me in many ways. I have whole images of your race that I normally look at everyday."

“As for you Sam, your human. I don’t have much to say about you. You’re the most normal person I seen on this mission.” Marble turns his attention to Claude Xiao, she takes a picture of the turtle. “I seen your content before. I watched your whole playlist on Haunted Kitchenware.” Marbles goes back to browsing its list of photos.

Hope smiled brightly as everyone continued on with their fixation on the I'ee and the pirate woman. This is great footage! The producers are going to love it!

"Oh! If you don't want your image to go onto NNN I need you to tell me now so I can activate the face encryption algorithm. I'll be filming the entire expedition. I am not going to geocache the footage to keep the mystery alive."

She gave her fellow journalist a look over and tapped her chin as an idea came to her. "Claude, if you want, we can collab. I have an extra drone you could use if you wanted to diversify your camera footage," she offered in a friendly professional tone.

The crew was motley, Chance then decided, so rightly motley that she had either doomed the expedition or had given it enough breath to burn from start to finish in enough deals and vids to brand them all famous in a weeks time. Either way, she could wash her hands of it, most certainly. Chance herself gleamed as she watched the small group, particularly the two reporters who seemed intent on recording it all. She had made a point to get at least two people with a camera attached to their hip, and the others simply to try and keep things diverse. That, and some of them were easy to verify the integrity of given the number of requests to accompany the many expeditions into the NovaLine space. "Now, as I'm sure you're all aware, each of us has some vested interest in finding the source of the signal." A slight, odd accent touched Chance's tongue, but it almost seemed to be more of a slurring than a true accent.

"One thing I have to add on as we venture out is to be safe, above all. I've been in contact with some other expeditions out here, and each one has hitched onto a different signal source. From what we understand there's no singular place that everything is coming from, rather there are several points in this solar system that's transmitting, whether it's all merging together somehow or if they are operating like proxy servers we don't know for certain. I managed to grab dibs on what I believe to be the original, or if not, one of the first transmitters." She paused as if to bask in her own behind-the-scenes accomplishment. "However, there are a few things to note before we land, and it's about the nature of it all."

"Our reporter friends can probably tell you that there are enough theories about the signal to fill a library. One thing that our scans into the signals as we approached has revealed to us is something quite alarming, and intriguing all at once. This solar system has been abandoned for a very long time. Normally space travel and the existences of civilizations leave traces, be it in actual structures of their actions, or the traces of radiation or energy or what have you, some small ripple of disturbance that their existence caused. None of those have been found, though my probe to the planet Aker managed to pick up an artificial structure near our scheduled landing site. It's likely that a single ship, or a small group of ships, could leave such a small impact in their travel that we simply haven't been able to pick up their presence or ripples with our scanners. Either way, that proposes something about what we're after."

"This is no military or government project, there's not enough foot traffic, nor enough for a company. All of those leaves traces that would have been found. This breaks down the individuals responsible to a small group, obviously with a very large budget, high technical skill, and enough supplies to build their project across this abandoned pocket of space, and to then project it into civilized sectors with enough power to hijack military signals. Suffice to say, this is a small group with the resources and skill to put larger public projects to shame." She paused, her eyes going to the I'ee. "Particularly given that the signal is hijacking methods of communication that normally are secure to the point of frustration, such as the Dark Elves organic networks, and behind private Taianese firewalls.

The ship began to shake slightly, and suddenly many of the blank panels on the walls, and particularly a larger set on the wall above the cargo ramp turned to a white screen, quickly flashing to the camera's view of the planet below. It was an ugly thing, covered in a smothering gray cloud of rain, with only decent pockets of clear sky to the surface, though that proved to cause any who looked upon it even more disgust, a wet red hue coated what wasn't uneven rocky features that cracked and groaned across the landscape. "Planet's atmosphere is breathable, carbon-based plantlife, no known fauna, though fauna presence is expected."

She shifted as she adjusted her suit, which appeared to be some advanced form of rock-climbing gear for the upcoming Everest competitions. Packed for warmth, with a sturdy tool belt, form-fitting boots and a jump-pack that nestled tightly against her lower back. "Ship has supplies to last us for a long time. Hope you all like the cold, though." She grinned, accenting the odd surgery scars that peppered her face.

The incessant murmur of the signal came to a stop, as if it had suddenly died, leaving bereft sound in its wake, and all at once it returned, louder, with a clarity unfamiliar.
"You fall like a star from the sky.
I remember you.
I remember this.
You came."

"No. Seek out another person's chest to touch," the warrior bug snorted before turning her attention away, instead regarding Sam's offered bar briefly, then shaking her head solemnly. "I am not hungry, human. Thank you," Gut-Stripe intoned. The voice of the captain brought her to attention, standing a little taller and straighter, antennae perked. She also rather pointedly ignored any further attempts at interaction with her, focusing solely on Chance's words and listening in silence. The various I'ee family fleets scattered across civilised space had likewise received the mysterious signal and struggled to block it or otherwise meddle with it. Though in general it did not cause them much frustration, it was curious enough that Gut-Stripe had come to investigate it on behalf of her family.

When the screens lit up with images of the planet they were approaching, she turned her head to better view them. "A putrid wound," she described it aloud in dramatic fashion. Dead, grey skin, opening to expose views of red flesh beneath was what the planet reminded her of.

Gut-Stripe tensed again when the signal went quiet, then gripped the hilt of her blade when it began again, seeming to address them directly. "Monstrosity," she spoke in a whisper, still staring at the live feed of the planet, albeit now with wariness.

putting way the meal bar back into one of the thigh pockets "nice to meet you too marble" he responded in his raspy tone as his mechanical arm flashed for a moment. like clockwork and obviously practiced he flips a sliding switch on the back of his face mask causing a locking sound to resonate from the front of the mask as he takes a deep breath in he twists the removable filter off the side of the mask putting it away as he grabbed a new one to take its place after securing the new filter he re flipped the switch causing a brief hiss as oxygen passed back threw the filter. all this happening in the time it took the reporter to introduce them self.

looking to Marble "word of warning don't start smoking." he said giving a slight chuckle at his own poor choices before intently listening to the briefing. noting how gut stripe responded to both the planet and the sound seemed to address them directly. Sam wouldn't show it from his face But he shifted slightly on one leg staring at the live feed "hey you reporters got anything to protect yourself with?" he asked not taking his eyes off the screen as his brows furrowed showing his discomfort "if not i recommend you get some, something doesn't feel right about this it might be nothing but id feel more easy if everyone had means to protect themselves just in case."

tearing his gaze from the live feed he looked to the captain "got any spare parka's?"

"Tch, that's a bummer," the eye-patched woman replied with a sigh, disappointed with the I'ee's reply. "Oh well." Glancing at the man nearby though, Ylfa rolled her eye with a groan of annoyance. "Cutlasses were made for fighting in close quarters where there's lots a shit your weapon can get caught on," she tersely replied, briefly glancing at the medic next. "It's a bummer that I've been recognized already, but I guess that's just how it is. Still, I'm on vacation, so don't hope to see me in my bikini uniform anytime soon." Looking at the nearby reporter, she shrugged. "Unless you have an auto censor for any time my name is mentioned, you might as well just give up," the blonde pointed out. The jig was up already, but that didn't mean she couldn't have fun still. When it came time for the briefing however, Ylfa simply set a hand on her hip as she listened. Everything made sense, though by now, the off duty Space Pirate Queen knew better than to expect everything to make sense. The Message coming to them again only seemed to cement that. Did the others even hear it? She couldn't help but notice the I'ee seemed less than happy though. It might have been a whisper, but the cyborg caught it easily.

"You're looking to blow it up huh? It cause you girls some grief?" she asked, now genuinely curious. The I'ee were practically hug-bugs, so drawing their ire in and of itself was an achievement.

"I don't check the Alastor feeds, so I don't know if you are on the hook Miss. I couldn't collect on any bounty anyway, I'm not a member of that organization. But, I don't think I have to censor your name. Depending on the time slot and the angle, I might have to censor your... ample assets though. It's all easy enough! We have a good algorithm and the AI enjoys locating those things, so it's all good!" Hope grinned with a dismissive way, her voice still upbeat. Her attention went to the feed of the planet, and the signal.

"You fall like a star from the sky? I wonder if that's a threat? They asked us to come but to what purpose?" Hope turned to the camera drone with the shaky planet reflected in the lens behind her. "Be sure to vote in the poll on the comments section of what you think will happen next! This is certainly exciting! We have an interesting group of adventurers on our quest. I'll try to catch up with people to give you more. But OcculTurtle is also here! Be sure to check out his feed too. Go subscribe, " Her voice was upbeat and her eyes sparkled. "Next broadcast will be from the planet's frigid and rocky surface. Stay tuned!"

She returned her attention back to the others with a shrug. "Captain, you expect this to be a trek up to a summit then?"

Unsure what to make of the pirate's antics, Claude nodded in response to Marble. "Oh, that was one of my first videos. The only one I couldn't figure out was the dancing silverware. I actually bought that set. It's fun at parties." He said, patting the kid on the head. He wondered why the Captain would bring a child on a possibly dangerous trip to the middle of nowhere. The kid couldn't possibly be old enough to be a nurse and therapist.

Claude turned to respond to Hope. He hadn't really worked with anyone else before but it might get him more viewers and more business. He nodded. "Thank you, that would be great. Hope Garcia, right? Nice to meet you." Claude said with a smile. "I'll just ask your drone for permissions. Being a Jongwu has a few perks, believe it or not."

He looked at the drone and reached out mentally. An augmented reality display popped up, visible only to Claude. It appeared as a green glow highlighting the drone with a few options and some information on the drone's specifications. He requested guest access to control the drone. She would be able to revoke his access at any time. It would probably take a minute to sync up with him and his phone.

Before he could say more the Captain started speaking, drawing his immediate attention. Some of what she said made sense but he disagreed with the assessment of what the signal was. He just couldn't see the point in all this if it was some group of people showing off their prowess. Why would they broadcast seemingly random information across the sector? He was betting the answer would be far more interesting than such a mundane culprit.

He was glad for the use of Hope's drone. With access to that, he could download the Captain's revelations and add some commentary later. He would have missed that bit. In his pocket, he had a pair of glasses with a camera and a microphone built-in he had intended to use. Now that wouldn't be necessary but he decided to hold on to them just in case. Noticing some of the others had weapons he felt the laser pistol at his hip. Even though it was a lower power civilian model, it could put down a humanoid if necessary. He hoped it wouldn't be necessary.

“I don’t know but a bikini does not seem to be a great jacket.” Marble places away her camera into backpack before singing it onto his back. Marble listens in on Captain's speech. “Ah, the unexplained and unknown. You know, there are only two main ways that this goes down. We either all die or we don’t die, but gain PTSD from this experience. Or some kind of variation in between those two options. Let’s hope that I’m wrong.” Marble states, shortly after being petted by Claude. “Thanks. I’m excited to see how your project turns out. If you need, I’m willing to shred some credits for you. Investigating horrors on the net is a slow method of making credits unless you sell your soul to the advertisements, of course. Heh.”

Marble looks around the room. None of these people have much of terms of protection. At best, they might have a low-power civilian model brought from a surplus store. Maybe, the pirate has something bigger and better to deal with threats but that’s speculation by Marble. “Mrs. Captain, may I bring a security droid? It seems that we’re going into an area that we don’t know about. The dangers that may show up may need to be dealt with in such a manner that requires force of arms.”

Chance wanted so dearly to agree with the I’ee as she glanced upon the image of the planet. She could see what the alien meant, it nearly did resemble a wound slashed across meat. She had seen similar, though she dared not mention it. For a brief moment, it seemed like the planet itself called to them with its vague threat. She felt unease in her displaced guts, and held back a look as she took a deep breath, the image of the planet growing larger, with more detail as they approached the pulsing signal of her probe beacon.

“Spare gear is still in those lockers, should our lesser clothed companions change their minds on their attire. I’ve seen some gene-splicers nearly nude in blizzards without care though, so I’m not inclined to judge.” Some gene-splicers had increased sensitivity as a side effect all across their skin, making even the finest silk grating to their nerves. It was difficult to avoid in some strands of alterations, Chance herself preferred such nerves dulled overall.

“I’ve heard the Dark Elves clamoring for someone to shut it off. With explosives, preferably. They really don’t like the idea of outsiders getting into their membranes.” She glanced towards the I’ee once more. She didn’t recall many communications between the bugs and the elves, but anything was possible in the time she had stepped away.

She instinctively grabbed a railing as the ship began to expertly plummet through the clouds, and through the turbulence of atmosphere. “I don’t plan on this being anything more than, well, anything, Miss Hope. We might step off the ship and find a radio house with the signal, or find a deep cavern leading to its source. I’m just not one to be caught unprepared.” She moved to put her other hand on her hip, finding the sturdy belt in the way, instead settling on one of the large external pockets as an equivalent.

Then she turned to Marble, and she unconsciously tightened her face as she regarded the question. Marble was already an odd one, and the mention of a security bot gave her pause. She had done her best not to ask many questions of the odd small… Person? She figured that it wasn’t a human, nor any alien she directly knew of, and the level of intelligence was far outweighing that of a child. Money had effectively kept her mouth shut, and now she somewhat regretted it. Why did this ‘girl’ need a security robot? “I… Suppose.” She responded.

She didn’t have much more time to weigh on it, as the ship quite suddenly jostled as it impacted the soil. Very quickly the constant hum and drum of the engines, as well as their dim vibration that all aboard had grown used to, slowly came to null, and the camera feed shut off as the cargo bay ramp seal was broken, and the sound that followed was anything but comforting.

It was both far too quiet and far too loud. The purposeful silencing of the engines and ship had left them without their familiar ambiance, and the replacement of harsh rain on the hull mixed with the effects of wind gave a forlorn atmosphere into them room, and Chance felt herself catching her breath. Slowly the ramp projected, meeting the grim blackened soil below, and the face of the planet before them was revealed.

The ship lay, near the beacon they had followed, in a patch of now burnt red grass, that quickly was washed over by the unhealthy pelting of rain. The sharp atmospheric changes of the ship quickly landing had uprooted much of the ‘grass’ that covered the patch of vegetation. It was like grass, though thicker and taller, standing at a normal humans knees. It was a silty red, seeming grown dirty as the insidious rain made no progress in cleansing it. Simply looking at it gave the impression that it would rub its filth off on whoever brushed against it. The roots were far deeper than any single plant had right to be, each batch of blades being birthed from carnivorous root systems that fought and tangled against their neighbors, down into the earth at least a dozen feet, prior to their mass uprooting.

Even more bizarre than the flora they had found themselves among was the sincere lack of it. They had landed at the edge of what appeared to be some sort of crater, or a more terrestrial result of tectonic plates, as before them was deathly wet stone, a massive hateful gash in the land that easily stretched for miles without dirt or growth. Full of cracks that eagerly swallowed the downpour, it appeared as if some otherworldly being had reached down with a scythe, scraping all that could be from the skin of the earth, down to its bone. Sitting among the cracks, among the stone and lack of life, was a circular indentation, recognizable as being too perfect to be natural, settled around a smaller hole, one that plunged out of view into the ground.

Within this odd hole, something artificial was clearly visible, even from the ship; the essence of a railing, one that vanished into the earth from its odd predicament in the center of this bereft stone. Chance swallowed hard as she stepped off the ship, scanning the environment around her. “Scans showed something artificial.” She pointed to the anomaly before them, a short walk away. “There’s our ringer.”

For once, the signal had nothing to say.

Hallowed Ground

Gut-Stripe seemed to meet Chance's gaze, if the slight turn of her head was any indication, but she said nothing more as they descended to the planets surface. A clawed finger tapped the hilt of her sword in an unusual display of nerves, but she managed to maintain her poise during the landing, shifting her footing only slightly as the ship came to rest. Befitting her image of the stoic, unshakable warrior, the I'ee was the first to approach the opening bay doors, standing at the top of the ramp to survey the land beyond before descending with graceful steps. Though mostly hidden beneath her long cloak, she wore a pair of heavy boots that seemed almost comically large compared to the lithe build of her legs, creating wet, squelching footfalls in the mud. Once she was standing outside, she turned back to wait for the others, watching them impassively as rainwater splashed off of her hat and shoulders and flowed down the slick, waxy cloak. She approached Chance once the leader had descended the ramp, listening to her words and gazing at the artificial hole set into the stone. Gut-Stripe did not say so aloud for obvious reasons, but thus far Chance was the only member of this excursion that she both respected and trusted.

Marble nods, walking to his room in the ship. A few minutes later, a large-mechanical robot accompanies her. “TEC-124, Model 52. Awaiting Orders.” the robot says. “I hope you like thick robots.” Marble jokes, walking towards the ramp. TEC is big, towering over Marble. TEC carries a single light-machine gun on its right hand, 7.62mm from the looks of it. A large-solid rectangle black is mounted on its back, a backpack of sorts. TEC is oddly quiet, but that could be the rain and other various sources of sound that drowns that every footstep of TEC. Arriving outside, Marble looks up at the sky.

TEC does a scan, its eye twitching about. “Can’t detect body. This does not match any selection of planets that in the current database.” She reaches out her hand and catches the rain in her hands. “We’re on an anomaly world, honey.” Marble notes. “Copy.” TEC response. “I do love the rain. How about you, sweety?” Marble darts her head at Gut, her soild-white face mask staring at Gut.

Nodding to himself Sam walked to get the cold weather gear from one of the many lockers removing his vest and bandoleer before putting them over the cold weather gear looking behind him he decided to ask "So, Gut stripe was it? out of curiosity is it true your kind are addicted to hugs?" Feeling relatively uncomfortable by everything that's transpired, when the ramp showed the environment around them Sam instinctively pulled the charging handle on his laser rifle.

"okay I'm just gonna say it, is ANYONE questioning the fact that the signal not only seemed to contact us but was aware we were landing, ei You fall like a star from the sky. I've seen a lot of weird shit but i thought the signal was just random per recorded messages not well what seems like a live feed..."

Sam slowly walked off the ramp thinking to himself Ok signal, whats here that you so badly want to show us

Claude grabbed a railing as the ship started shaking. Not that it would help if the ship suddenly lurched violently, he realized. His arm would just break, and then the rest of him when it slammed into the metal ship. He hadn't traveled in space enough to get comfortable with it. The landings were always the worst part for him. He relaxed a little when the ship finally touched down. He was content to let the tough-looking I'ee and the big robot go first just in case. The fact that they weren't immediately dragged off by some tentacled monstrosity was reassuring.

He zipped up his jacket and walked over to one of the lockers, pulling out some gloves and pants to wear over his jeans. Hurriedly he slipped them on and followed the first three down the ramp, staring curiously at the bare stone. His eyes followed the gash on the surface to the circular indentation. It gave him the feeling that the signal was inviting them in, or perhaps daring them to get closer. The camera drone got a wide shot of the scene before dropping down to follow over Claude's shoulder. He stepped off of the ramp and turned to get a better look at the grass.

"Interesting," Claude said, leaning down to take a look at a few blades of grass that were still intact. He ran a gloved hand over a single blade to see what it felt like, and to see if the red would indeed rub off. His borrowed camera floated in front of him, dropping down to get a close up of him inspecting the odd grass.

"Pfffft!" Ylfa blew a raspberry, eyes briefly rolling at Hope. "I'm not exactly 'in uniform' right now, so you don't have to worry about that," the buxom blond pointed out, tugging at the rather conservative track-suit that she was wearing at the moment. "Still, could you put like, a tiny-ass censor bar over my eyes or something? I know there's no hiding for me, so I might as well make fun of it," the vacationing pirate queen remarked. Stepping out with the others, she let out a low whistle of appreciation at the alien landscape before coming to squat by Claude. Admittedly, she wouldn't have looked too out of place holding a bottle of vodka thanks to her choice of clothing. "What's the grass look like? The ecology dangerous or something?" Ylfa asked, curious.

Hope continued to beam, recovering from an awkward recovery from almost falling over the railing in the rough landing. "We can hope for the best and prepare for worse, as Granma used to say," she nodded to Chance as she stared wide eyed at the scene before them.

"Whatever the Novaline is, it seems the unwelcome foreign body, dug into the flesh of the planet. It looks like the wound oozes still. I wonder, is this a siren leading us deeper into the breach to gobble us up?" She commented to her camera drones before shifting back to Ylfa.

"Of course, we can make the censor bar whatever you like. We can give you a superheroine mask if you want. We can change you title on screen from Ylfa to something like Captain Pasties if you really want."

The world before them was a forlorn thing, harboring the plants they saw but at the same time, it held its weight as if it wished to be rid of its own growth. The air stilled, and the rain paused for mere moments as Chance and Gut-Stripe reached the dirt. It was an emptiness in the air, the kind of feeling one received in the wilds of a forest as all the wind died, and all the joyous birds quickly reigned into fearful silence. Just as quickly as its more natural counterpart passed, so did the stilling of the rain, and it returned with its smothering vengeance. The world did not care for what rooted to its dirt, yet at the same time, it could not rid itself of its parasites.

Chance broke her view of the planet, and the anomaly they were to head towards, to watch the others disembark. She had not directly said it, but she half expected someone to not follow at this point. She had felt such smothering atmosphere before, and often times it brought the nervousness of folks out to view. She glanced at Marble and the strangely expensive security drone that accompanied it. “Not just the planet, this whole solar system isn’t on any public charts. It’s in a lonesome state, from what I saw. It’s further from other celestial bodies and entities than is considered average. I did some digging, and various powers have scanned this region of space, and this specific system did not appear, though it would have appeared as a minute dot on the very edge of the best scanners at the time if it did.”

“As for the signal-” She spoke to Sam but turned back to face forward, beginning to walk despite the downpour. “It’s made seemingly targetted remarks before. It’s hard to say if it really is talking to us or anybody in particular, there’s more than a few reports of it, given how many people are listening at any given time.” She neglected to mention that she simply didn’t like the idea of it speaking to them as they broke the atmosphere, as if to do so would be acknowledging that this was its planet, and they were walking into foreign territory.

Claude’s cameras would have achieved quite the view of the surrounding environment, and despite the rain, it seemed as if through his cameras he could see further, with better clarity, than his naked eye. The smothering rain hovered on their close horizon, yet through his lens, just a bit further could be seen, the rolling of hills, that emptied out into the static haze of downpour. Not a single tree, nor a plant taller than the grass he was inspecting could be seen.

Through the gloves he wore, the grass was rough, covered in bumps and hardened juts from hyperactive scar tissue repairing whatever the rain bore down hard enough on to break and crack. It was a strange texture, as if the fabric of it dug into his gloves as he ran his fingers among the growth, and that did seem to pull off the plant, leaving faint stains of rusted red. Each blade of grass was hard, and with their lengths, it was easy to see that walking without thick pants of some kind would be unpleasant, as beaten edges of the unkind grass would bump and poke against whatever flesh it could. Looking at batches, it was almost as if each root system was at war, both below the dirt and above, with some blades cutting directly through others, and growing along the other side.

Though Claude nor anyone else could smell anything through the rain, as he inspected a given leaf, its reddened texture rubbing off on him, Ylfa could smell something quite strongly, slamming into her nostrils as if she had pulled the lid off a concentrated bottle and doused her face in it. It was a pungent, acrid smell, burnt and sulfuric in a way that blocked senses. It was a smell she knew well, of discharged kinetic firearms, of gunpowder spent. It was almost suffocating, leaving her nose dry despite the humidity.

Hope, being the last to disbark the ship, would see the landscape in much the same as the others, but what stood out as she spoke to her cameras is what the lens of her own cameras saw. Where Claude’s seemed to see further in the rain, her own view seemed to be claustrophobically short, barely able to render to the artificial hole in the ground ahead of them. This was only accented by what it did see. While everyone it recorded looked perfectly normal, the same way she could see them without the lens, it recorded Ylfa separately, as if the camera were dimming her colors. In a way, she almost appeared to be lacking color at all, to the lens she was merely a number of blacks, grays, and whites, merging together in the shape of a person.

“If our camera-people are quite satisfied-” Chance called behind her, not willing to walk too far ahead of them. “I’m sure we’re about to get some much better shots than our landing sight.” With that, checking to make sure at least a few were following her, she carefully picked her path down the small hill between them and the stone gash that split the planets organic layer. As they neared, it seemed less like a lifeless husk, and more like a bastion of something else hidden in plain sight.

Among the cracks of stone, something red, light and inoffensive, reached through them, never daring to near the inches bare to the surface. Still and veiny, it could almost be confused for actual veins, until their odd cracked shifts and turns showed them to be roots, quite unlike those of the grass above, which were then and a darkened brown.

Thick, plentiful, and branching out into hard to see branches, the fruitless veins of the stone dug deep, fat on the downpour that tried to drown it out.

The I'ee warrior turned to observe the large robot that Marble had brought with it, bristling with mistrust, then addressed the small, faceless being that owned it as well as Sam. "Must you both accost me so?" Gut-Stripe huffed, haughty and grouchy in equal measures. "Your levity will not be welcome in that abyss. It is not a place that conducts mirth." She turned away and began accompanying Chance towards their target, though she did pause for a moment and turn her head slightly to say to Sam: "But yes, we do enjoy hugs." Gut-Stripe then strode onward to catch up with their leader, one hand still firmly planted upon the hilt of her sword, seeming reluctant to release it.

Sam furrowed his wrinkled face as he looked at the red veined roots. Kneeling down he would grunt and the feeling of the pokey grass as he turned his laser rifle to a ow setting letting off a round to cut some root to examine it with his cybernetic arm before putting it in a empty pocket on his utility belt attached to his non armored leg. Before Joining gut stripe in walking keeping a respectable distance from her so as not to seem rude, as they walked hed turn a dial on his mask as it made a few clicks as more clean oxygen was sent threw the mask hose. "Hey if things go pear shaped here i got your back." he said to gutstripe in his raspy voice before watching the surroundings for any signs of movement from anything that is not them "hey Captain? should we setup a base camp just in case were here longer than expected?."

Still squatting, Ylfa couldn't help but ponder the strange plant life, at least for a moment longer. "Smells like some sort of gunpowder?" she guessimated. "Maybe even cordite? Not so sure really," the woman admitted. Though she was carrying a slug thrower herself, the ammunition was at least a bit more modern and clean burning. Standing up, Ylfa shot a smirk over at the I'ee. "The moment there isn't any humor left, hope's gone too you know. Just hope we keep making jokes through this whole thing, since that means we got a fighting chance if things go bad," she pointed out. "Besides, hugs are better when everyone's happy." Walking forward with the group's leader, the thick near-bladelike plants rubbing against her clothing, Ylfa idly held her hands behind her head. This was already an interesting outing, given that they had just started, but something else slowly bubbled up to the surface of her mind.

"You guys think it was talking at us, or are there more people landing or already landed?" the vacationing pirate queen blurted out, little heed paid to any potential fears and the stoking of that fire.

Hope followed after the others, absorbing the strange alieness of the planet. She pulled her jacket more tightly around herself as she squinted into the distance. Her feed was fuzzy, she supposed it might be some sort of electromagnetic interference that might have made the video playing back over eye strange. "What smells like gunpowder, Captain Pastie?" She tried to shake the unease as she watched the steadily approaching chasm. Into the unknown. Her smile faltered for a moment and she took a deep breath, not catching whatever it was that Ylfa smelled.

She looked at the others but only Ylfa was different. Why? The question pressed at her temples and she made a note to examine her footage and Claude's later to see if his drone was likewise affected. She noted the odd red grass. "Is there a volcano here? Maybe that's the reason why the ground looks so... much like it does?" Her unease deepened as her hand went unconsciously to the old tatya hini pistol tucked into a holster on her right thigh. The presence of grandpa's gun soothed her, though it might not work later. Something of the lingering magic warmed her against the oppressive cold.

“Don’t be such a downer.” Marble says. TEC-124 turns to Gut. It’s eye scans her. “I take offensive, but I don’t have emotions.” Mable chuckles at the comment. “Why do you dislike machines so much?” Marble turns her head towards Gut. “Most I’ee that I take in, don’t have a hate for mechanical beings.”

As Claude mentally processed the camera feed, the disparity between what he saw and what it recorded was unnerving. Despite having several people around the camera view made him feel unbearably alone. He glanced over at the others for an instant to reassure himself that they were still there. "Right, uhh.. the plant, if that's what it is... feels rough. It's covered in bumps and it almost feels like this rust-looking stuff is grabbing onto my gloves. Wouldn't walk through it without thick pants on, it's also hard, like... well, literal blades of grass. And the root system, it seems violent in some way. I haven't seen the like before." Claude narrated, glancing up at the drone. He considered whether or not to mention the drone footage.

Ylfa's statements drew Claude's attention. "Like cordite...? I can't imagine the battle that would leave this much residue..." He said with concern. Rising to his feet, he turned back to the group and hurried to catch up, the drone dutifully returning to his shoulder to offer a first-person view of his progress. He looked down at the ground curiously. "It looks like two different ecosystems, maybe."

He was again drawn to Ylfa's comments about others landing. "None before us that I know of, Captain. Unless it was a one-way trip." Claude said uneasily. The nervousness of the others was starting to rub off on him.

Gut-Stripe stopped mid-stride, then turned herself around to stare down at Marble silently for a moment, bristling with irritation and obviously holding back all sorts of snappy replies. "Please keep your automaton away from me, little one," the I'ee finally said in a quiet voice, placing emphasis on the words she addressed Marble with. "Nor do I wish to engage in small talk. This place frightens me and I wish to remain focused." Without waiting for a reply, Gut-Stripe turned away and continued her advance, carefully avoiding setting foot upon the red roots of the grass as if they might taint her.

Sam Let out a raspy chuckle overhearing gut's conversation with Marble. "bee-have you two, we don't need blue on blue in this weird place marble try not to be a buzz-kill and Gutstripe don't let him/her/it get to you if you wouldn't mind i might need your help with that blade of yours, id like to gather samples to study in our spare time to study. the more we know about the area were in the better chance we have at survival given how topsy turvy it is already" he said lighting a cigarette and holding it up to a small port on his mask.

Ylfa continued to carefully examine the leaf in her hands, even going so far as to sniff the thing - it was just as she thought.

"Yeah, these leaves, or maybe their juices really smell like gunpowder to me. And really strong too." Glancing up from the blade of leaf she was examining, Ylfa couldn't help but smirk at Hope, taking note of what the other woman was calling her. "You think I should start wearing pasties by the way? I never tried those before to be honest." It faded as Claude made his own observations though. "Maybe it's not all native? Could be proto-carnivorous like brambles are. Instead of catching sheep and lambs, anything going through in a hurry is gonna get hurt." The tracksuited blond's one good eye glanced over to the I'ee as she made her displeasure clear, with Ylfa's own growing as she did so. "Hmph. If a Thi-Thi is uneasy, we should be too," the vacationing pirate queen remarked.

Pulling out a lighter, Ylfa flipped the lid open and brought the flame to the leaf.

"If you aren't sensitive to the cold, it would probably help ratings," Hope replied with a grin. It felt good to smile. The absurdity of the comment helped offset her unease for a moment, but then the click of the lighter. She wanted to protest, it might be dangerous but it happened too fast to stop her. She braved herself for something to happen, if it truly smelled of gunpowder- then wouldn't setting the ruddy thing ablaze be bad?

"That's strange. I don't smell anything different. I think there might be some sort of interference or a distortion field around here somewhere," her gaze swept the ground looking for some deformation or sign that there was more hidden beneath the patch of sulfur grass. "My colors have faded, for dramatic effect it's great but I don't know."

"It doesn't feel like anything like lamb could live here..."

I twisted myself about like the twisted ones, and I lay down flat on the ground like the dead ones ... The words spring unbidden from the depths of her memory. The story had unsettled her when she was younger. "Is this like a faerie ring? If we descend down, we will cross the veil to the other realms of old?"

“Try not to tear each other apart before we really start all this.” Chance said as she glanced between the machine and the I’ee. “It would remiss to waste time and supplies on squabbles.” She came to a stop as she saw the rest behind them pausing to investigate the grass. Personally, it held little interest to Chance, but for it to smell of gunpowder? She would like to think that she had a fairly strong sense of smell, but she didn’t even get of a whiff of that.

“We shouldn’t need to set up base-camp unless we wind up really deep somewhere out of range of the ship, otherwise the ship should function just fine. I certainly hope no ones tired just yet.” She tried to levy the air just a bit, but something about Ylfa caught her attention as she saw the flicker of flame.

The moment the flame touched the edge of a leaf, the flame went out, and the lighter lightly hit the ground among the violent grass.

And at that moment, Ylfa was gone, but the space she occupied was not absent, as someone else took her space. What, or rather, who, stood in her place was a thin, scrawny stick of a human female, barely a shadow of what the pirate who stood there before was. Her clothes were worn, tattered, the kind of casual, conservative rags that one would wear out and about in town to keep people from staring too long as one passed by. She looked haunted, clutching a ragged and ripped book in her hands, that quickly slipped her numb fingers towards the dirt below.

The book hit the dirt, the rain quickly moving to ruin the already ancient pages and smear its faded ink, and at the moment it did, Ylfa stood precisely where she was as if nothing had happened, as if the person mere moments prior did not exist.

To Hope, curiously, her camera did not see the same thing as her eyes. As it focused on Ylfa, it seemed to capture two separate events happening at once, one in which Ylfa did not disappear at all, and the other where the secondary figure took her place. Both events layered as if two different scenarios were shot from the same angle, then the footage spliced to merge its contents into once. The two figures even seemed to pass directly through one another. As Ylfa ‘reappeared,’ the second figure moved in the camera’s lens, until it simply vanished in Ylfa’s larger body, either merging or simply appearing to do so before vanishing from that too.

To Ylfa, however, what occurred was much stranger. Darkness enveloped her vision, and the smell grew sharper, as if someone had just fired a large caliber weapon, and brought the muzzle of their rifle to her nose. Darkness choked her, it was not just a lack of light, it felt as if she were suspended in a vacuum. No ground, no air, nothing but her and an endless void in every direction.

”That’s not your first skin, scarab.
It didn’t help you before.
It won’t help you now.”

The voice was a smart one, well-spoken yet rough, as if familiar with complex words but gone unused for too long. For a brief moment, a familiar smell broke through the void, the awful stench of blackened tobacco, and alcohol-laden breath. A gunshot broke the silence, and she would find herself jolting back to where she was, still on the planet, the ringing still thick in her ears.

The book remained, settling in the dirt. It would be immediately familiar to her. After all, she had read it before.

Gut-Stripe had just turned about to look at Chance when she saw Captain Pasties simply vanish, replaced by a total stranger. The I'ee let out a sharp hiss and drew her blade, but stopped short of approaching the mystery figure, instead watching in silence and as still as a statue. It was only once Ylfa had returned that the warrior sprung back into motion, dashing forward at full speed with her cloak flapping, sheathing her sword as she went. Rather than tending to Ylfa, the I'ee practically dived for the fallen book, making to scoop it up out of the grass and cradle it beneath her cloak in an effort to save it from the rain and mud. "You are alright?" she finally asked the pirate once the book once in her grasp, backing away from her a few paces as if she might suffer a similar fate to her.

Ylfa idly considered Hope's request for a moment as flame and leaf began to near.

Normally, it wouldn't have been an issue since the Space Pirate Queen was typically flaunting her great riches and prestige, but right now, she was on vacation. Just chilling in a track suit and exploring something popular on the paranormal orientated /x/ boards. On the other hand, did it really hurt to be nice to someone? Just as the lazy hamster-in-the-wheel that represented Ylfa's thoughts settled on showing just a bit of skin, she felt darkness. Darkness and the stench of gunpowder. The piercing pain of .50 cal blowing clean through her chest from behind came rushing back as her processors went from idle to full-power. Distant, foggy talk of shocked yet uncaring crew-members that she thought were friends not give a damn played over and over again as what little scraps was left of her organic flesh trembled and shook in her head. And above all, she remembered how that the Gart piece of shit just treated her like stripper trash and shot her for snapping back. She hated them. She hated them all. Ylfa remembered the stink of gun-powder as she lay there on the floor, cored through and through, with her mind once again chained to meat processing.

Unable to move. Imprisoned in her own body as a depressing, sour malaise crushed her in darkness while the undead closed in.

"No. I'm not alright," Ylfa stood, tossing the leaf down and crushing it underfoot. Looking down, she stared at her hand with an eye, the other still hidden behind a patch. "Tch! Why am I even wearing this thing right now?!" she tore it off to reveal a perfectly good eye. "Whatever the thing is here, it's not friendly," the track suited blonde turned her gaze to the I'ee warrior. "I saw black and heard it say, verbatim, 'That’s not your first skin, scarab. It didn’t help you before. It won’t help you now,' - but it's all garbled gibberish if I try and reconstruct it from my databanks," she explained. "If you're hoping to frag this thing, count me in!" Ylfa unholstered her pistol and brass checking it. "I'm gonna - " The woman stopped cold. "Seriously? It's fucking with me that hard?" Ylfa gritted her teeth.

For the benefit of all others, she pointed her finger at the book that the I'ee was holding. The one that had materialized out of nowhere.

"...whatever walked there, walked alone.”

Hope stood wide eyed as the footage and her eyes processed the events differently. She opened her mouth to speak and closed it again with an audible click. Her brow furrowed as she found her voice, "Claude, did you catch that? Interference? Or you think that was a conditional projection.. or... "

Twisted myself like the twisted ones, and lay flat on the ground by the dead ones..

Mists and voor domes... bury you deep within the hole with the dead ones.

...if you listen carefully you can hear a place breathe.

Her thoughts settled on the old story again, and she rubbed her arms before she focused on Ylfa and the I'ee, only daring to take another step forward. "What is the book?"

Sam would watch as Ylfa disappeared replaced and reappeared instinctively he brought his rifle closer into himself as he tensed up and his breathing slowed looking onward twords the expanse of the world they landed on Only the unknown frightens men. But once a man has faced the unknown, that terror becomes the known. "It's the unknown that draws people." Sam mumbled to himself looking back to the book now held by Gutstripe. "but where do they go once drawn in...mabie they do exist after all." Sam continued to talk to himself as he looked onward to the land before them.

Taking a deep breath he looked to the captin "ill take point, im starting to get the feeling were not alone....at least not in the usual sense of the word." gripping the rifle grip he wasn't paying attention to the slight screech of the old handle from his unknowing death grip on it. only releasing the strain as he began whistling a very old song to calm his nerves. Claude turned to look at Ylfa in time to see her replacement appear. The camera followed his gaze. He stopped walking towards the hole in the ground and stared at the gaunt version of Ylfa until she was replaced by the Ylfa he knew. To him, the fact that the book remained seemed to be the most unsettling part of the whole event. The I'ee's reaction to the book was odd as well. Her people must place a great deal of value in old books.

He listened to Ylfa's account of the strange swap, looking at the gun in her hand. "If that was any indication of what we're dealing with, I don't know how effective a gun's going to be." He said pointedly.

Looking towards Hope in response to her question, he shook his head. "I wasn't looking when she disappeared. It's almost like.. she switched places with a different version of herself. I guess it could be an advanced visual effect, except the book suggests the other Captain was real." Claude mused. "Doesn't make any sense that lighting a leaf on fire would cause whatever that was though. Something is definitely aware of us."

He turned back to Ylfa, curious about the answer to Hope's question.

“Tec, can you dig 30 meters down for me?” Marble asks. TEC-124 nods. The robot reaches over to its metal backpack to pull forth a massive shovel. TEC-124 places his LMG on to his back. “If our friend here has managed to upset an unknown entity by simply messing with the grass...I wonder what else will happen, if I start to do things to the planet..more directly…Get to digging, Tec.” TEC-124 drives the shovel into the dig, taking out a big lump of dirt and throwing said lump to the side. “Let’s see what happens.”

"Huuuh?" Ylfa obnoxiously began questioning Hope. "What about the boo - " Looking at the old text again, the sheer depth of the problem suddenly washed over the blonde all at once. At first glance, her furious mind registered it as a frustrating annoyance, but now? Now that she took it in, Ylfa's eyes and mouth widened in sheer horror as her cheeks grew red. In an instant, her left eye glowed with a crimson menace, right as a thick, solid column of energy plowed through the hairy chest of the werewolf, seared through the oiled abs of the sparkling vampire, and burned away the abomination that was the female self-insert-character on the front page. As a boulder in the background cracked and burst under the blast of energy some long ways away, the unharmed Warrior I'ee was left with the smoking stub of a book, its blackened, faintly glowing upper edges rounded out by the attack. "That effective enough for you turtle-boy?!"

Despite the display of firepower however, Ylfa was now gasping, panting heavily now that she was hot and bothered. Grabbing her track suit, she unzipped her top a bit to vent heat that she had generated from the attack, her chest rising and falling with each breath. Slowly calming down, the woman ignored the weirdo talking and humming to himself, and became vaguely aware of the shota-loli and their machine's efforts, faintly curious as to what they'd find.

Marble looks at Ylfa. Hhm, better check up on her. “Med-67, protocol 546. Analyze and update medical profile for Ylfa. Inject 140 milligrams of Zro in accordance to Section 5.” The head-size drone that have been hovering Marble’s shoulder zooms towards Ylfa. It’s white casing opens up to a blue eye. “Don’t worry. The drone will do a quick check up on you. You should be fine, but the health of the crew is my job. ” The drone scans Ylfa before going towards her hand and extends from its casing, a small object - a needle, but too small to be seen by the naked eye. “Blood test. It won’t hurt, and it’ll take a few seconds. Better safe than sorry.”

The drone quickly stabs Ylfa’s hand, extracting a small sample of her blood. “No need for blood pressure check.” Marble says to the Med-bot. Marble turns towards Ylfa. “Mind to open up your shoulder. Going to inject Zro. Medical drug that’ll calm down your nerves and make you less distress. Won’t affect your reaction time or thinking in anyway.”

The med-bot goes to Tec’s metal backpack, grabbing stuff. The med-bot takes out a tank of oxygen and a breather, along with a syringe, and a cold water bottle. “A bit extra, I know.” Marble states. The med-bot hands the water bottle to Ylfa. “Tec, you should stop digging. Refill that hole.” Tec nods.

In the case, if Ylfa allows Marble to do its job then the med-bot would inject the syringe into left or right shoulder of Ylfa. After that, the med-bot would place the breather on Ylfa’s mouth, a flow of fresh oxygen to Ylfa’s lungs. The Zro would take effect quickly, placing Ylfa’s body into a state of calm and relaxed - lowering her heart rate too.

The blood test stung.

"Hands. Off." Grabbing the medical drone's syringe applicator with inhuman speed, she stopped it cold. "One, I don't appreciate just having psych drugs shoved on me," she began, the replica M45A1 in her other hand moving ever so subtly in Marble's direction. "Two, it'll do jack and shit for me, so save it for someone else," she narrowed her eyes at them. As she said this, the results started streaming in. There were already medical nano-bots in her bloodstream, but on top of that? The scan couldn't penetrate. Ylfa was living tissue over metal endoskeleton.

"So, the informers were right. Your profile was odd to me at first, but I guess I'll have to sallow my pride and say that they were right." Marble looks to the med-bot. "Update Ylfa's profile to the data given by the team, along with updating the medical items that were blocked to be used on her." Marble looks to Ylfa. "You confirmed my suspicions about you. I should have the proper medical items now to allow me to aid you in the event of a medical emergency."

Marble turns a head again to the Med-bot. "Get the medical crate in storage, beyond the larvae room to the left."

Gut-Stripe lurched backwards as the book in her hands that she'd tried to save was annihilated by Ylfa's well-placed shot, dropping the smoldering remains back into the dirt and, in the same motion, drawing her own pistol from beneath her cloak to point it at the pirate captain. "What are yo-?!" The I'ee's angry, confused shout was cut off by the medical drone buzzing in to bother Ylfa, prompting Gut-Stripe to glare at it in frustration and consider shooting it instead. On the bright side, the distraction gave her time to calm down and by the time the robot had left, Gut-Stripe had returned her weapon back to its holster. She was visibly bristling with baffled frustration, staring in silence at Ylfa and Marble.

Sam looked over to Marble "Hey fair warning before you decide to blood sample someone and if that thing tries to do that to anyone again without warning them first and they giving you a ok ill shoot the medical bot we clear pipsqueak?" walking over to Ylfa and attempted to pat her on the shoulder "you ok there pirate slav?" he asked trying to use humor to defuse the situation that's quickly getting stranger by the second. looking back to marble as he ordered his robot to start digging "aw fuck no." he said before putting a las shot in the ground 2 feet from marble. "that's a warning next one won't be...we don't want to provoke anything and we don't even know if that's the reason for what happen did but if it is i'd rather not piss off something like that."
