Chapter 17.5: A Pact to Outlast Them All

Admiral Alfred Lürssen had never been a fast runner, he preferred to walk at speed. In this case, however, it found it necessary. His shoes pressed hard against the metal floors as the late-middle aged man searched for the Gartagen delegation. His age was only making it harder. As he turned the corner and barely dodged a pair of alliance navy officers, he was met with a series of doors and corridors. He cursed his luck and blindly chose a door. He was lucky, as his passable English let him understand that he was running towards the Deming's shuttlebay. He grinned, if he couldn't catch up, he could at least hope to either cut them off or meet them at their transport back.

He went from a run down to a jog as he began to brush past people of many backgrounds: Human, Reichmänner, Tatya hini, Kishargal. He was closer, but still not close enough. He'd only barely seen the Gartagen Ambassador and her entourage so he was going to have to hope that his memory of them was stronger than of his mother-in-law's birthday and on his side. He grit his teeth and reached the shuttlebay and was met with shuttles from almost every nation represented. This was all he needed.

One of the lessons that every Interstellare Marine Officer was taught was origin recognition based on construction and design. He could use this. He was able to mark out the two closest shuttles as they were Alliance. He ignored the Taianese one that seemed only there in spirit and the weird living thing the darker blue people had ridden in on. He knew the Konglong less by the design but more by its crew and at this point he slowed to a fast walk. He passed their own shuttle, dismissing the salutes from the two guards as he finally found what he was looking for.

It was almost as sharp as the Prosecutor battleships that the Union's Solar Navy utilized as a backbone. Stark white to denote its purpose, it was surrounded in Rapid Reaction Force guards as well as Navy technicians as well as two Union Commissars who seemed to just be along for the ride. It was almost fortune that they'd been parked so close. Lürssen turned back towards his shuttle and gave a sharp whistle to summon his two guards and began walking towards the squat Gartagens to do what Kohle had asked of him.

He stopped as soon as an NCO began to walk up. Before he could speak, Lürssen raised up and clicked his heels. His Sharani basic was absolutely terrible and with his accent it was close to incomprehensible. Instead, he spoke in his rough galactic trade language. The alliance English. "Hallo, The Kaiser and his dispatched delegation would like to request the Union's Ambassador's time on behalf of the Kaiserriech and Ambassador Kohle." He remained standing as straight as an arrow, hoping that someone understood him.
