New Begennings: Chapter 2

Post by Tony » Thu Feb 28, 2019 3:46 pm

Location: Tanis Star System
World: (Terra Nova)
Date: 02/28/3019
Time: 03:08

Vicksburg Colony had found Terra Nova to be a reasonable enough place to settle and make a nest. The world itself had a diverse enough biosphere, though it was a little on the dry side. Scientific examination of the world indicated that 2200 years ago, something had drastically and suddenly changed the atmospheric composition to make the world much more amenable to sustaining terrestrial life. Though judging by the temperatures and biomes that had formed, the ideal life form was not something suited to the range of climates on Earth. That being said, there was water, fertile soil, and a wealth of minerals.

Since the arrival, The Sojourner crew had found this region of space to be relatively remote, there were not communications signals directed into the system, and the planet itself appears to be devoid of inhabitants claiming it as their own. As far as anybody could tell, Nobody was interested in Terra Nova. Which was a relief, as the Soujourner found that going home was currently not a possibility.

When a hyperspace flush was detected by Vicksburg's sensor satellite grid the technician had assumed it was Sojourner returning. Then the satellites began reporting peculiar readings. The object was approaching rapidly. The object was giving off a lot of energy to push itself towards Terra Nova. Then it reduced speed, and moved into Orbit of the world, synchronizing itself so that it was hanging above the colony.

It was a starship. roughly six hundred meters long, and it began giving off patterns of readings that could only be transfers of power to different subsystems. A translucent beam swept from space and lazily scanned the sleepy colony, before dispersing. It was then Vicksburg received a hail. The communications center lit up with the ping.

Charlie was near, and sudden communication was sent to him. "Sir, we have an unknown spacecraft attempting to contact us. We are stalling, but you told us to let you know if anything big happened..."

Charlie had reported to himself early that day and stood outside when the ship came into orbit. The first blip was a tachyon sensor lighting up that told them that someone had arrived. It was a singular ship and thusly there wasn’t a lot of commotion about the vessel. What seemed odd was that despite their relatively advanced sensors they hadn’t detected the energy pulses earlier than this. “Private Jacobs! You’re fired!” he shouted to the young portly man that was supposed to be manning the communications line as it was standard procedure to hail a vessel the moment it entered the solar system.

The Sojourner was well underway on a transportation mission to relieve the nearby mining colonies of good and well-earned minerals and metals. While Charlie’s people were definitely making themselves a good profit of what was already present the economy would always and forever require more and more materials to build buildings, create new roadways and of course to produce starships. Granted, the last bit was a bit beyond their capability aside from producing small shuttles to get from one planet to the next within the solar system.

Things were going well. Well enough anyways. The local flora hadn’t been much of a problem, the atmosphere was proper for sustaining the lives of the species they had brought with them, the food they had brought was growing well within the hydroponics bays… and all the while Charlie had wondered; when would someone else come?

“Alright. Hit the alert Cortez. I want every Marine on standby, every civilian ready to flee if need be and each and every fighter ready and primed for launch the moment we detect trouble. Get the P-D-S up and running too just in case.” He commanded a nearby Anubian.

“Got it boss man.” Cortez responded as he spun in his chair to face the screen ahead of him and immediately began to type a response. Voice would have been easier… but a text communication was quieter and everyone present could read and write. They would have no trouble discerning the meaning. A cigarette hung from the creature’s mouth and it bobbed erratically as he typed. Though he seemed to be panicking, Charlie knew better. That creature was as calm and collected as a rattlesnake sunbathing.

“Jenkins, get me a line on our new friends and let’s see what we’re up against.” He commanded another inside the command center as he prepared himself to step up to the radio. It wasn’t particularly graceful. There was no video. There wasn’t even a screen for it. Such things were a luxury and even in his home universe, such luxury wasn’t something to be taken lightly even with high speed communications.

“You got it chief.” Jenkins, an Esseteh, responded with a lazy and uncoordinated salute as Charlie walked past him.

“Serenity. Take scans of the ship in orbit and tell me what you see.” Charlie commanded the AI within the compound as he stepped up to the radio.

“Yes Captain.” She responded as she invisibly began to ping the ship with a vast array of sensors to determine what exactly it was and also pinged the tachyon scar to determine from whence it had come. “Shall I begin hacking into their systems to determine their intent?”

“Not yet. But be ready.” Charlie commanded as he looked over to Adri nearby. “You sure you wouldn’t rather be in a bunker someplace being an ambassador n’ such?” he asked, waited for the answer, then turned to the others present to look them over and determine if they were ready. That doctor was here… the one from his ship. He didn’t recall her name but he knew her at least minimally. Perhaps he should be thankful he didn’t know her by name.

Then there was… Aiyana. That was her name. “You. Go home for a bit. We’ll need the floor as clear as possible. Take the doc with you.” Charlie commanded her as he placed his hand on the button for the microphone though he didn’t quite depress it that moment. He turned his head to look at Lilith and raised a brow though it was hidden underneath his helmet. “You wanna stick around to see what you’re investing in then that’s up to you but just so we’re clear, the command center’s P-D-S isn’t completed. It’ll likely be overrun if more than a dozen missiles are fired. And I don’t even think that anyone here uses missiles.”

With that… Charlie quieted the nearby room and picked up the radio. “Unidentified vessel, you are in restricted airspace. Identify yourselves, over.”

The doctor stood in the back of the room, looking out at the ship and trying to guess what it wanted. She hated when he told her to go and curled her lip up, glaring at him. She may appear not to be of any real use, but she had skills not mentioned. She looks back around the room, seeing that everyone is ready for anything and stands her ground.

Aiyana was the most unassuming member of the crew. She looked young and at times was a bit timid with meeting a member of the crew but she was always warm and welcoming when people came to her office. The young elf took care of the records, where they went and what they did along with gathering information for the captain about a location/person/race. Today she was just organizing information about Tera Nova, what they needed to make note of but also what they needed to get done. The list of need to do felt endless and she was constantly updating it and then sending it over to the captain to take care of it.

Aiyana was finishing with today's reports when she heard someone say there was a problem, her bright eyes looking up as she saved her data and held the tablet against her smooth stomach as she walked over to someone, " What's going on?" she asked them and in a rush of words they told her about the starship that was there. That wasn't good news for anyone here. With a small calm breath, she went and walked over to where Charlie was and was about to ask him if he needed help when he told her to go home.

Now, normally she would listen but she wasn't a delicate wallflower to hide away in her books and notes, " No offense sir, but if they speak another language I can possibly translate if it is needed. Anyways what would going home do?" she asked him. Yes she didn't look it but the small female could hold her own when needed and so she stood right there with the doctor who also didn't look like they wanted to go and hide at home either.

It was just another morning on Terra Nova for Adri, the routine unchanged. The dravin rose up to offer the foliage outside a look no different then a cat staring at water- hello, my nemesis. He was still adjusting from the familiar cold touch of metal and ice, and perhaps the winterland that captured Jötunheim had frozen his heart too. But despite all these changes, there was one thing that the dravin did like, and that was the foreign silence that befell the morning. And so the dravin wasted away the wee hours of a calm dawn, trading looks between the brightening skylight that poured through the trees and the mirror, observing his new uniform.

From aviator to ambassador, and from cold to warm, these changes made the creature inside Adri cling tight to his core in fear of change. Of all the things that he’d endured, he never thought that some simple things would be getting to him like this. And even though he was mentally sweet talking himself to find some comfort, he was finding that even these methods were beginning to fail.

And then, there was a new ship.

Standing next to Charlie, the dravin observed as the command center buzzed with a rush of information being frantically tossed between one person and another, and despite the chaos of the moment, the dravin actually found a bit of peace in this environment. Sure, there was some ship out there, and that’s all horrible and stuff, but there was an odd comfort amidst all this motion.

“I might’ve said something about how you’re mistakening my kind for cowards, Pavolav,” Adri began, still finding these English words quite challenging at times. “But what I will tell you is no.”

Serenity's initial scans were problematic. The A.I. had never actually scan this type of starship, though she could through reasoning deduce, the ship was protected by some sort of energy shield. Weaponry was another matter entirely. The energy readings coming from the starship suggested the vessel was using a rather powerful Anti-Matter reactor. Internal scans, however, were obscured by the star ship's shielding.

The Tachyon scan yielded more information. The ship had appeared at a precise point in the star system, strategically away from the system's other planets, then simply traveled directly to Terra Nova. From the looks of it, this ship was the only ship other than the Sojourner to come in or out of the system.

There was a brief interlude from the dispatch of the transmission Charlie had made, to the response. But the starship did answer. "Attention interlopers. This Lord Maximillion Carpenter of the HMS Star Dragon. We detected your entry into this star system and were sent to investigate by Arch Duke Helmly of Reservoir. This is his world that you are squatting on."

There was a brief pause then the man continued. "This trespass cannot be ignored. However the Arch Duke is honorable and fair, We detect that you have numerous items of value to use, and we will promptly take half of what you possess as the Duke's royal tax. You shall load these items up into a shuttle immediately. Henceforth we shall leave you unmolested and in peace for half of this world's orbital cycle. When we return we will collect the Duke's due."

Charlie and his crew would then receive an upload. It was a list. The list desired food, various bits of equipment, textiles, clothing. But most notably half of the none human population of Vicksburg.

"If you deny us, we will be forced lay waste to your settlement. Do you comply?"

He stood upon the precipice of war and slavery yet again. Did every universe have some damnable species akin to the Hierarchy? Charlie keyed up the microphone and spoke one phrase. “Wait one.” He said before un-keying and turning just enough to face his nearby assistants that looked to him for guidance.

“Seems like a King George situation.” Charlie spoke as his officers relayed the code. It was a simple code; it meant that someone was coming to enslave them and take their resources. They’d encountered this situation once before.

“We have received your transmission however most of our population is alien; thusly our efficiency would be drastically reduced if you were to take them. Perhaps we can increase the amount of resources taken and in in-exchange we keep our people? This detail works in your favor of course. It means more resources in the long run. Also; our ship is not nearby. It will take us considerable time to reach you in orbit. Our shuttles are extremely small and incapable of carrying the amount of cargo you desire all at once though we can use a low-tech solution in order to accomplish this but your sensors are unlikely to pick it up; over.” Charlie responded as he nodded his approval to nearby officers.

They immediately began to get the gist of it. When planes weren’t available… alternative solutions were used. In this case, the solution from the Nell Invasion was being implemented by inflating low-orbit balloons typically used to launch temporary satellites up to the usual orbits that enemy warships would hover. These balloons, however, were nigh invisible on sensors…

She was close enough to hear the transmission, her eyes going a bit wide at the last bit that they wanted. She was considered non-human- hell's she wasn't human at all and you could tell by looking at her. The female gripped the tablet tightly as she cleared her throat some before moving closer to Charlie, " Sir...once we give them almost everything they are wanting, we should probably consider trying to find another planet...that sort of tax...we keep giving them half of everything we have we will have nothing to be able to survive off of." Aiyana told him.

It would be a lie if she said she wasn't nervous or scared of this situation but what made her more uneasy is none of her information had anything about this Arch Duke Helmly of Reservoir. She was quietly scrolling through all the information she had, lips pursed together tightly as she looked at the Pavolav, " We know nothing about this person...it would be beneficial if we could get learn something about them Sir. I know that its probably obvious but we can't do anything with an unknown, Sir." Aiyana told him. Not knowing something made her uncomfortable, she liked knowing and learning and now she needed to learn about this Arch Duke fellow who was demanding things from them on the threat of death.

Near the collective of worry, was Adri. He stood near Charlie and Aiyana, the way his hand was rocking those padded knuckles against his spaulder suggesting that he was marveling, but at what, nobody could know.

What they requested was massive, and it would leave an incredible dent in Charlie Pavolav’s progress, but the possibility of refusal seemed even more impossible. Here, the enemy had the advantage of space, and to eradicate the colony would be as simple as a snap of their fingers. But beneath the surface, perhaps the situation wasn’t all so dire.

“Pavolav,” Adri addressed the human, more or less leaning over at his side and putting a hand up to the side of his mouth in a comical fashion. “I’m curious to know what your course of action is.”

His course of action? As far as she could see, he had no real course of action. She walked over to one of the stations and began reading through the list of their wants. It was a pretty good list. Granted, they could survive on the supplies lift behind, but not in the level of comfort they were used to and they really couldn't afford to help others anymore without going to get new supplies. So that meant this was not a good thing at all...

She sorted out the things in the medical labs in her mind rather quickly. Barring any problems or crisis, they were good. However, of course, their mission was to help and such. That meant there would always be crisis. She shook her head. "From the medical standpoint, Sir, we could stand to lose everything they want... but we would be hard up from then on until we get more supplies. Anything more than a stubbed toe or minor surgery and we might have a problem." There was nothing else she needed to add at that point. No need to make him any more nervous then he might already be.

"We do not care for excuses on the matter." The translated voice replied. "We expect only compliance. This is your final warning. If our scans do not detect the items we have requested being transported up to us in three minutes, I will have no choice but to open fire on your colony."

The communications link was severed. Scans of the starship that loitered above indicated that there was a power spike surging. The People of Reservoir were famed for their shrewdness in negotiations.

“Start sending the resources but hold fast on sending any people.” Charlie commanded one of the nearby officers. “Your concerns are noted… and frankly, I’m fully aware of the consequences.” He told Aiyana and Silken as he opened a nearby drawer and pulled forth a manual from it. “We have alternatives… none of them particularly great but they’ll work.” Charlie said as he opened up the manual and began to read what was written in it. “We can reasonably give them the resources they’re asking for and still do fine.” He began as he looked over the many blueprints. Some of them would be beyond their reach… but nothing critical to the colony’s success.

“What we won’t be able to do is grow or expand. However… I wonder how they like fire. Or more accurately I wonder how they enjoy the oxygen being sucked out of their starship.” He mused aloud as he pulled up a diagnostic on the colony’s command center which showed a significant abundance of hydrogen, oxygen and methane gases in surplus. It was pretty typical of them to have these gasses. They were commonly used in industry or exploration; especially hydrogen… given that they needed it for not only sending the weather balloons into low orbit but also to get new ship parts off the ground.

“Oi.” He called to a nearby Marine. “Send up as much of our gasses as they want but with a special little surprise. Namely; a detonator. By that I mean send up a number of our explosives in addition to these supplies. They should learn to be careful what they wish for lest they get it all. Have Marines sent up in weather balloons and peel off a few shuttles at random once they’re up high to pick them up after the sortie. I’m all for giving resources to buy time but people aren’t something we trade in. On that note however… send up as many Balalonians as possible with as much equipment as they can carry. It should be more than sufficient and I don’t doubt they haven’t already started raiding parties.” Charlie ordered to nearby Marines. “Don’t be an idiot, obviously. We’re not trying to suffocate our own people; just theirs. I also need every volunteer that knows how to shoot a gun ready to go up as well but let’s avoid pulling in civilians; even prior service. They’ve done their part already.”

With his orders given, there was a lot of resistance… some of it even needed to be put down with taser batons or similar apparatuses… but they at least left the various companies they had essentially robbed with a promise; repayment in triple. It would be expensive but it was well worth it to silence them. It was the Alliance’s way after all; throw money at the problem.

Hundreds of weather balloons began to drift skywards and Charlie mounted up into a shuttle in his armor with his rifle in hand. “We’re sending an ambassador and his guard to meet with you face to face.” Charlie informed the ship in orbit. “Perhaps we can make a deal and make sure this all goes smoothly. Something along the lines of… I’unno… seventy-five percent of our resources and complete control over the colony?”

It was a bold faced lie. There were no plans for negotiations but fortunately for Charlie his tone was fairly monotone… usually. There in the shuttle with him were the largest, fiercest Balalonians he could’ve mustered at the time clad in armor that could stop fifty caliber rounds from their own technology on a repetitive basis. “Start jamming.” He ordered the pilot whom merely flipped a switch and let the frequencies that allowed sensors to do their jobs be flooded with far too much information for even their own AI to comprehend. It probably would’ve looked like it was merely a sensor glitch or perhaps even merely sensors malfunctioning due to an alien design of starship… but… they asked for people to board their vessel. Charlie was going to give them exactly that.

With him…? Aside from the Balalonians he’d grabbed and the Marines that filled the shuttle? There were as many volunteers as they could possibly cram inside of it; totaling twenty with the over-laden shuttle. Most of the other shuttles were of similar hold; Marines, Balalonians and volunteers willing to give their lives in service to the colony.

When the communications halted off she stiffened slightly. Things didn't seem like they were going well at all and when Pavolav started to give out orders on what to give out she worried that might not be the best course of action but she didn't have any better ideas so the elf was going to go with it.

At the ask of volunteers she nodded, " I'll go up. I may not be able to shoot a gun but you know I have other strengths that will be useful. Let me go get my staff and I'll be ready to head up Sir." the young qualation told him as she then went off to her house. It didn't take her long since she didn't own much but she quickly packed a satchel with her tablet, some rags- just encase of bloody noses, some aspirin and smelling salts for the worst case scenario. Aiyana then went around to grab what looked like an ornate walking staff but in her hands, she knew how to use it to channel her abilities to give them an extra punch when needed.

In total it took her five minutes to get ready. She looked unassuming in just her casual clothes but she did not want her movements hindered by bulky armor. It was a risk and she knew that and she knew their captain wouldn't approve but before he could get a word in edgewise for that she was off to one of the shuttles going up. Aiyana was good at faking being braver than she was, normally staying in the background if she had too but today wasn't the day for being meek.

Once on that shuttle, the others around her would just stare at the small female. She said nothing to them as she held onto her staff while pulling out a tablet and writing down an inventory of all the things that they were bringing up- just to put on a tiny bit of an act that she was helping make sure that all the goods got up to them.

With the transmission line cut, and orders being traded between personnel, the only thing that the dravin could think about was the civilians. He knew that there was no stopping Charlie, and that his necessity for victory would be the inevitable result of hundreds of casualties, so at this point there remained only one last piece of this colony; the civilians. And so amidst the sudden rush of people, the dravin managed to catch Charlie by the arm and offer a firm tug to gather all of the human’s attention.

“I implore you to reconsider,” Adri said sternly, the low amount of light causing his eyes to appear more red and intense with emotion. His grasp upon that arm was strong, and it made the dravin wish that the will of his words could be as powerful. “You are at a great disadvantage, Pavolav. And I assure you that you will not win this war.”

Even though Adri knew it was pointless in trying to argue with Charlie, he still hoped that perhaps the fog over his judgement would be thinned by some common sense. And yet, when Charlie put silent emphasis on this war being the only option, Adri still felt a twinge of shock and he couldn’t make sense of why.

“Or at the very least, tell me how you are going to move these innocent people away from this fight.” Adri moved the subject to the greater point at hand, trailing behind Charlie and the gathering volunteers that were flocking into the shuttle. “You must see past this pointless waste of people’s lives, Pavolav. It’s not fair to get these people murdered simply because you refuse to fall alone!”

Here, Adri watched the shuttle door lower and lock, knowing that the people aboard were being sacrificed for nothing. They wouldn’t win, and he knew it. And even if by some miracle that they do manage to succeed, they were only igniting a flame that would quickly burn them down to nothing.

All just because someone couldn’t lower their pride, and foolish confidence.

When she first studied medicine, she was looked down upon because she was a woman. But she had a natural talent and knew she would do great things as time went by. Though her name change over the years, her skill as a surgeon only grew. There was very little she couldn't fix anymore. When she joined this... group... she decided that certain things needed to be in place. One of those things were very tiny beacons implanted in everyone.

This beacons could be uploaded and she could then see a readout on everyone going on this raid. The readouts told her if and when someone was hurt and allowed her to bring them back to her med-bay to heal them. She wasn't looking forward to when the powers-that-be discover what she could now do and start using it in wars.

She hit her comm and called a code that would warn her people what to expect, "Major doom about to go down." She knew her med-bay was now at top speed, preparing for a flood of wounded, dying and dead to start arriving. She began typing on her pad, sending a list of possible injuries they could expect to be coming in.

She wasn't going to interfere with the Commander's plans. She had learned long ago that no matter what happens, you can only waste so much time before you just need to hunker down and prepare for what was going to happen.

The shuttles departed, yet perhaps it was fate. Atmospheric exiting was always a dangerous process...even in the face of major technological advancements. For Aiyana, and the rest of the people sent up to the strange alien warship, the trip was eerily silent. For Charlie Pavlov and the Doctor; the shuttle suffered a malfunction midway through the trip. One of the primary thrusters had been clogged by some kind of atmospheric based algae, that had clogged the heat sing, causing a massive reduction in thrust. Charlie for his bravery was forced to go back down to the colony.

The shuttles entered the space around the world and were immediately greeted by the enemy starship. The ship had a saucer-like prow, with elongated engines attached to the saucer section. Beneath this was a large torpedo shaped secondary hull. The shuttles moved under their own power before they were towed into the star ship's landing bay. Aiyana would hear translate voiced called out on the shuttle communications. "Power down your craft, remove your equipment and step out onto the deck. If you do not comply we will eject your craft into space and destroy you." The words were said passionlessly, and the electric buzz of the translation programs working only made these people sound more machine-like.

Adri, and eventually Charlie and the Doctor would see that these people, were true to their word. The Starship was moving away, to the other side of the world. A few seconds later and they left the gravity well of the planet, and moved behind the primary scanners....

Well… fuck. Charlie held onto the overhead rail as the shuttle rocked violently once it stopped going upwards. “…” Charlie was silent as he watched the other shuttles go up. What could he say? Fate was a son of a bitch. He stared in shock for a moment as the wheels stopped turning. These weren’t the Nell or the Hierarchy whom had completely alien versions of warfare. Thusly he came to a conclusion; he was fighting other humans… whom were often arguably one of the most dangerous species. “SON OF A BITCH!” he shouted and briefly he was thankful that his helmet stopped any potential noises from leaving as he slammed his fist into the wall while the pilot descended.

On a more positive note… there wasn’t about to be a riot. Charlie had, at minimum, given it one hell of a shot to keep people here and safe. On a less positive note they were headed to slavery and uncertain futures at best. On another positive note; most of the people sent were well trained Marines and Balalonians whom came from a warrior culture and prided themselves on their physical capabilities and prowess in battle.

Perhaps there was a way to still salvage this…

“I’m going to burn every last one of them to the ground…” he hissed to himself through clenched teeth.

The shuttle eventually touched down and Charlie pushed his way past curious eyes and many other solemn ones. He paused briefly enough to bring up the implant on his wrist, swiped his hand over it, brought up a keypad and typed in a single word for a message directed at every Marine. They’d understand what it meant.

Warsaw…

A singular word with a grave but exceptional meaning. They would train others in secrecy to fight using anything they could get their hands on. When the time was right…

There were other issues to combat before the political and social wildfires became an unstoppable blaze however. He would revisit his feelings upon the matter at a later date. And so? Before hundreds of people that were left over… Charlie simply shook his head. “We’ll meet in the town square tomorrow morning to discuss this. I won’t stand upon metaphorical graves and manipulate emotions.” He whispered to a nearby officer whom clutched his weapon tightly until Charlie began to speak. “Relax. They know we tried at least.”

“Yes sir.”

“Just… Charlie.” He corrected the crewman as he walked past him into a nearby church.

For the most part he ignored others that spoke to him. Charlie set his rifle by the door next to a Marine that simply nodded his head in response. They’d crippled their military today. What was left of it was going to likely set a dangerous precedence for whatever followed. But today, that wasn’t Charlie’s concern. He released the safety lever on the bottom of his helmet, popped the atmospheric seal and tucked his helmet underneath his armpit as he approached the altar and gave a heavy sigh.

“Father…” he whispered as he knelt and made a crucifix across himself. “…I reach out to you for your guidance. Please show me which way to turn. Calm my anxious thoughts, come speak into my mind. Strengthen me as I falter and feel weary. May I feel strength rising up within my heart. Bring clarity into my visions and dreams. I trust that you are with me, no matter where I go, or what I decide to do.” He began as he folded his hands together; a rosary between them combined with a small handful of dog tags. “You are the light that guides my feet. You are the map that gives me direction. You are the peace that makes me strong. You are the leader whom I faithfully follow. May your light illuminate my life and your guidance bring direction. May I find inspiration in your word and peace in my heart as I follow you. Lord, I ask for courage. Courage to face and conquer my own fears…. courage to take me where others will not go. I ask for strength… strength of body to protect others. Strength of spirit to lead others. I ask for dedication… dedication to my job, to do it well… dedication to my country, to keep it safe. Give me Lord, concern… for those who trust me and compassion for those who need me and please Lord….. through it all be at my side.” His whispering kept on.
“Remember, O Lord, against the sons of Edom the day of Jerusalem, who said, ‘Raze it, raze it, to its very foundation.’ O daughter of Babylon, you devastated one, how blessed will be the one who repays you with the recompense with which you have repaid us. How blessed will be the one who seizes and dashes your little ones against the rock.” – Psalm 137:7
“Lord… as we prepare for what might be our darkest hour please, lay your protecting hand upon each individual in this colony that comes to know you in their own way. As no doubt our enemies pray to you, in their way, for protection and guidance and peace we ask only for the returning of our people and for our way of life to endure. Amen.” Charlie whispered before crucifixing over himself once more and giving a hefty sigh.

It was a rocky journey, clutching her tablet and staff tightly as the female just tried to not panic through the entire flight up. Closing her eyes, she started to silently recite the elements of nature to just think of something else other then what was going to happen once she got up there. * Gods I hope the captain's plan works...if not well, looks like my future is going to get interesting all over again.* She thought.

When they finally managed to dock though, she noticed that the captain had not been among them and that made her stomach knot up even more. When the transmission came through she placed her staff against the wall and went and powered down the ship- she personally did NOT want to get exploded in space and she didn't think anyone else here wanted that either.

With no other weapons or armor on her, she opened the door to walk out. Now what her traveling companions did was on them, she had zero control over them but what she did was walk out and pulled up a list of things, " I have the list of items you...requested. May I speak to who's in charge of unloading so that I know everything is received?" she asked, the elven female asked. She was calm and had a warm smile on her face as she spoke to whoever was waiting here, she did not want to look like a threat at all to these strangers if she could at all help it.

As she waited, her heart was pounding from a mix of anxiety and fear- fear of what was going to happen and if they were going to let her leave. She didn't know what they planned for those that were made to board the ship, she just hoped that her looking basically like a secretary made her less of a target for the time being.

And lo! He stood as witness among the front-row seating of Terra Nova’s surface, as some of the shuttles that ascended to heaven appeared to be rejected by the messiah that they sought so desperately. It were as if the hand of their Lord coalesced into the very skies, and threw back those that he found unworthy of breaching the atmosphere. And in this moment, Fate had told Charlie Pavolav NO.

Adri spectated the gradual fall of Charlie’s shuttle, not yet aware that this fool stood as the shuttles current cargo, among other souls who so loyally were willing to throw away their lives for a cause they couldn’t have possibly ever won. And when he realized that Charlie was what the Lord sent back down, watching as the man was thrown out in defeat, he sincerely wished that the shuttle had slammed into the planet, rather than he be doomed with standing alongside this man.

This had to be punishment.

But why couldn’t he die in a flame?

Adri walked among what remained of the colony, a silent specter who witnessed the reality of defeat effect groups of people differently. For some, there befell a sort of depression onto them, like a cloud vying to block away the sun and all hope. And for others, defeat struck them like a flint to stone, the spark of revenge flashing in their eyes. But of all of these people, they each equally shared a moment where a fire was ignited, the flames were just climbing faster for some more then others. And there was only one way that this fire could be tamed, and that is through motivational speech and the continuation of trust between the people and their leading authority.

Religion is a curious topic for the dravinauryn. In their society, their lords are the people who’ve effectively carved the future for them, and their beliefs seem more physical then mythological. And so where Charlie found this church to be the Lord’s home, Adri saw it as just a fancy box that people seemed to congregate in. As far as Adri knew, the god that Charlie looked up to for support had never once lived within this very building. He’d never set foot on this planet. So that just made Charlie praying to a ghost. And as much as Adri wanted to snatch the man up for his stupidity, he allowed him the time to look over his mistakes through the common prayer.

In the time that Charlie prayed, Adri might’ve been locking onto target, and adjusting his mental crosshairs for specific points in which to strike, because as soon as Charlie had stood up and turned to face the dravin, the first thing that Charlie would’ve seen was the padded knuckles of Adri’s hand. Truth be told, nobody could’ve predicted such an act, because here Adri had stood as casual as could be, and even as his hand flew, there were no glimpses of anger. Just a neutral-faced dravin with no regard to how durable the human skull actually isn’t.

“You tell me what you have planned to fix this, Pavolav!” Adri growled, catching Charlie by the collar if he were to teeter from the punch to the head. “You can’t tell me that you didn’t see this plan to be severely flawed! That you didn’t see the great disadvantage you were in!”

“Those people aren’t spendable, Pavolav. They are as alive as you or I, and at no point do you have the right to decide to risk those innocent souls.” Adri continued, pulling Charlie closer as though he might’ve been some poor rag doll. “I only have one eye, and my judgement isn’t even half as blind as yours is.”

Her scans of the ships as they took off keep running through and she watched them with ease as she went to her med-lab. Already her crew was getting ready for the income of wounded. This was not what she wanted, but she had no control over any of it. People rarely asked her what she thought of what was going on. The fact that her palm itched to slam the Commander upside the head didn't mean much.

As she walked, she read some of the scans and stopped walking. She turned, looking back and up into the sky. Most of the ships were head up... but one was coming back down. According to her readings, it was the Commander's. She cursed softly in her native tongue and turned back. She sent word to her team to be ready. No matter what, she knew there would soon be trouble. She turned the corner and saw him go into the holy place and stopped, waiting until he was done. She was not one who followed such things and would wait while he did whatever he needed.

As the starship vanished from the colonies' scanners, the one thing that would haunt Charlie was what had been said previously. Six months. The ship would return in six month's to collect more people and resources. Charlie, Adri, The Doctor...all know that those six months would go by swiftly and they needed to be prepared for it. Allies, resources. In some way shape or form, they would have to come up with a plan to defend themselves against these people. Or submit.

Aiyana swiftly discovered that the people on the ship were humans. He calls to come out and talk resulted in human soldiers coming into the group and apprehending here and the other aliens. "We do not speak to animals!" A man yelled out at Aiyana before striking her across the head with his rifle, sending Aiyana to the deck. You will do as you are told or you will be disciplined, slave!" He barked, seemingly striking the elf woman with his words.

The other aliens were similarly treated. The humans who had come upon the shuttle were made to embark, with their supplies still onboard. The shuttles were then made to return to the colony, and tell Charlie what they had seen, and heard.

As for Aiyana and the alien members of the colony, they were swiftly stripped of their identity, dignity and possessions, and put to work as chattle people onboard the star ship.

Charlie was stunned by the strike across his face for a moment… or maybe several. It was lucky that Adri grabbed him by the collar because he definitely went slack for several seconds. When he awakened however there was a whole new side to him that the world got to see. “HASHBROWNS!” he shouted boldly as he snapped to attention and raised an open palm straight forwards into the air.

He soon enough came to properly at least.

“Spendable? You mean expendable? NO SHIT THEY AREN’T EXPENDABLE!” Charlie responded as he rammed his fist into Adri’s one good eye. He wasn’t as beefy as other Marines but it didn’t take much for Charlie to make the connection that eyes were vulnerable. “STILL WISE NOW?!” he shouted as he pushed Adri not to injure him but instead to create distance between the two of them before this got any worse.

“You think I want everyone here dead? How about we put you in chains then since you seem so keen to live on your knees instead of die on your feet!” he suggested to Adri as he readied himself to fight… to the death if needed. “Now I have a plan you son of a bitch! It involves getting our people back! Is it a great plan? Probably not! But it’s the only one I have! You said you wanted to fondle the tech here? Great! Then I guess you’ll be motivated to build what I need built!”

The moment she was struck with the rifle she fell down to the floor, a gash above her eye started to weep blood as she laid there dazed for a moment. Her head was pound now, worse than when she used her abilities. Closing her eyes for a moment at that, her head pounding as she was pulled up but when she was, she balled her fist up and punched the human who touched her. " I am NOT a slave!" she yelled at them.

From then on they would find her stubborn and refusing to listen-especially about removing her clothing. Aiyana had been enslaved once before and she still had nightmares about it and now that it was happening all over again she was in flight or fight mode. As they forcibly stripped her of everything- clothes, bag, and tech- she was left to wear just a type of loincloth basically. Glaring at them angrily at the humans, she was growing to hate them more and more as they proved to hate her just for what she was.

As they tried to make her work, they would find she was not built for much of manual labor- that got her continuously punished and beaten and verbally abused by them. At night she didn't sleep- not after she had to burn one of the human males who thought she was an easy target because she was an elven female. The bloody nose she got from burning him was well worth it- as was hearing him curse and call her a fire witch- but she knew that would have some unforeseeable repercussions in the morning when they were forced to work till they dropped again.

Where Adri hoped to find common sense inside of Charlie, he only found the Hitler of all breakfast bars, who probably led a campaign against pancakes and oppressed the rights of... hashbrowns? The dravin probably wore a comical expression as he watched that arm sail up, where his eyebrows where knitted together and one was twitching, his features outfitted with a look of what in the actual fuck. For one brief second, he genuinely wondered if he had broken Charlie even more, and pondered where the reset button was.

And then... sigh...

“Agh!” Adri nearly squeaked, clasping a hand to his one good eye. He was beginning to stumble back already before Charlie gave him a good shove, and the dravin fell into one of the pew’s, flipping back over the boxed end and meeting the bench with his back. “You... You focker!”

Adri rose up onto an elbow, his hand gingerly contacting the socket of his one good eye, which glared from between fingers that splayed themselves apart. He looked absolutely vivid. “That’s a hookers shot! Cheap, a-and... and... just... Fock you!” Adri stuttered, a certain pitch in his voice that made him sound slightly more feminine then usual. Squealy, even.

“Well so is sucker-punching someone from behind right after they’re done prayin’!” Charlie responded as he gestured right towards Adri with a command-hand. ‘Now get your ass up! We have to stay united if we want to win this so quit with the bullshit!” he shouted as he snatched up the creature by his collar and hauled him back onto his feet.

Charlie’s eye was shining and vaguely reminiscent of what had already transpired here. The Houses of Reservoir had dealt Charlie’s colony a black eye. “C’mon mother fucker! You think you’ve got great ideas then well by God I’d love to hear’em!” he shouted as he grabbed Adri by the collar and dragged him outside towards the town square. “Meeting! Now!” he barked at a nearby officer whom ran off to announce the calling.

He nearly threw Adri towards the stand as he pointed all his fingers and his thumb on the same hand towards Adri’s face and began to speak… “Now let’s set the record straight. There ain't no argument over the choice between peace and war, but there’s only one guaranteed way you can have peace and you can have it in the next second surrender. Admittedly, there’s a risk in any course we follow other than this, but every lesson of our history tells us that the greater risk lies in appeasement and this is the specter some of us refuse to face; that the policy of accommodation is appeasement and it gives no choice between peace and war only between fight or surrender. If we continue to accommodate, continue to back and retreat, eventually we have to face the final demand: the ultimatum. If we tell them that we’re retreating under the pressure of this indignity, and someday when the time comes to deliver the final ultimatum, our surrender will be voluntary, because by that time we will have been weakened from within spiritually, morally, and economically. They will believe this because from our side they will hear voices pleading for ‘peace at any price’ or as someone will put it, he’d rather ‘survive through therapy on his knees than die on his feet.’’’

“You and I should have the courage to say to our enemies, ‘There is a price we will not pay.’ ‘There is a point beyond which they must not advance.’ A great man of humanity once said, ‘The destiny of man is not measured by material computations. When great forces are on the move in the world, we learn we’re spirits; not animals.’ And he said, ‘There’s something going on in time and space, and beyond time and space, which, whether we like it or not, spells duty.’” He quoted from memory as he stepped away from the tiny one.

“You and I know and do not believe that life is so dear and peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery. If nothing in life is worth dying for, when did this begin just in the face of this enemy? Or should Moses have told the children of Israel to live in slavery under the pharaohs? Should Christ have refused the cross? Should the patriots at Bunker Hill have thrown down their guns and refused to fire the gunshots that liberated Earth? The martyrs of history were not fools, and our honored dead who gave their lives to stop the advance of the Wehrmacht didn’t die in vain. Where, then, is the road to peace? Well it’s a simple answer after all.” Charlie continued as he stood up straighter.

“You and I have a rendezvous with destiny and we’ll preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we’ll sentence them to take the last step into a thousand years of darkness!” he shouted, slamming his fist against the podium hard enough that it cracked just a tidbit at the edges.

“So you asked for a plan? Fine! I’ll give ya a fuckin’ plan! We’re not just gonna shoot those bastards that took our people. We’re going to carve out their living guts and use them to grease the treads on our tanks! We are going to murder these lousy, cock-sucking, doorknob licking bastards by the bushel!” he shouted as he pointed his open hand towards the sky where the shuttles still descended from. “We’re going to build a torpedo… planet-based. And we’re going to launch it at them when they get here next time to take our shit. I can’t tell you all of the plan… operational security and common intelligence… but I can guarantee you that in six month’s time we will not only have started our valiant and bloody campaign but we will have set forth on an offensive that the enemy simply cannot maintain against!” Charlie shouted. “By God… I actually pity the poor bastards!”

Amidst being hauled around like an angry five-year-old’s abused teddy bear, Adri’s mind raced with pleading thoughts of what have I done? He was hauled onto his feet, where he tried to regain his composure before being drug out to the stage and tossed out onto it.

Here, Adri listened to all of Charlie’s preaching. It was like he’d opened the flood gates to Charlie’s confidence and now the tide was spilling out into the open space, vying to fill up the crater in his colonists souls with his courage and strength. And Adri couldn’t decide whether this was a good thing or not.

Piles upon piles of words were burying Adri’s thoughts down in massive increments, until his ears echoed with Charlie’s voice and he tried to wish himself deaf at the human’s side. At least from this higher position, the dravin could look out to all of what remained of this tiny colony, and observe the effects of Charlie’s speech.

For many, they carried themselves like beaten dogs, likely mourning the loss of loved ones. And for the other side of the group, which contained mostly giant angry space lizards, the wildfire was only growing with intensity, and the dravin couldn’t tell if this fire was with or against Charlie’s command. What Adri did know, is that these words would mean nothing very quickly if effective action didn’t fall in close behind. And that could mean a backlash from the colony. Now Adri knew somewhere in his mind that wasn’t echoing with Charlie’s speech, that such a backlash would be focused more on Charlie then anyone else. What he wasn’t entirely sure of is whether that backlash would direct itself at him in any way, now that he stood here at Charlie’s side like any ally might. Would this society consider Adri a hand of power as well? He did not know, and that made him very uncomfortable.

Very aware there was trouble in the holy place, she stood up and began walking over to it when the door was thrown open and the two men came out. She could see both had minor wounds on their face and she sighed, shaking her head as she began walking a bit faster. Once Charlie had let the other male go, she moved to kneel beside him and tend to his face quickly as she listened to the Commander rant.

"Wonderful. So in six months time, when all the people we have lost to them are dead, we will do something else to piss them off. Great plan." she mutters, not very loudly but loud enough for each of the two males to hear. She just knelt next to the other, looking at the man but doesn't say anything else, knowing she was going to be in trouble already for saying anything at all.

She had been around for a very long time and knew where talk like charlie's lead. People would die and everything would fall away. She hated this and sometimes wished she could find herself on a small island where she could put her feet up and relax. Sadly, that was not the case. Now they were going to blow something up. Again she shook her head and let them figure things out.
