[The Donkey] Le Joli Ânesse - Chapter 1

Post by CadetNewb » Tue Sep 17, 2019 4:23 am

Eden, High Orbit
Spacedock 1

The heart of The Interstellar Alliance, Eden System was home to numerous shipyards, defense platforms, power stations and docks that played host to an endless stream of vessels. From the distance, they looked like toys, but as one neared, their scale only grew and grew and grew until the smallest personal transports to hulking cargo vessels all looked like tiny insects. While matter synthesizers fired up, atoms coming into existence from nothing as new hulls were laid, windows were washed as hulls were repainted. From the extraordinary to the mundane, everything could be found in orbit over Eden, and it was here into Dock 343 that their orders lead them. Outside sat the sleek lines of destroyers, vessels meant to prowl like wolves to pounce on prey or protect the fleet, their predatory forms only dwarfed by the larger cruisers. The backbone of any fleet, they formed the main line, pushed the offense, defended against assaults - their fast, sturdy, powerful forms could do it all. But even then, they were eclipsed by battlecruisers such as the Excelsior, Audacity or Enterprise, each of these named ships illustrious as they were storied.

Looking out of the great windows, one could only imagine what their ship would be.

But that had to wait for just a moment longer. A certain mousey woman was in the waiting area, pacing about as she wrung her hands.

Eden Orbit
Spacedock 1

A woman wearing the dark blue-gray uniform of the Alliance Navy walked towards the observation gallery windows for docking port 343. Over her uniform tunic, she wore the more casual puffy uniform vest to which her lieutenant's rank pin was affixed to the left breast. Her uniform cap sat atop the jaw length violet tipped shiny golden hair that framed her tanned face. Through the gallery windows she could see the sleek and smooth shape of Harrier class heavy gunboat number 2648. The red trimmed blue and white hull gleaming in the morning sunlight as the star crested Eden's horizon.

The woman smiled as the ship came into view. Yes it was small, much much smaller than the Repulse, the cruiser she had served aboard prior to her attendance to Command School, instead it was small, deadly and fast, that and it was her new post.

She let go of the handle of her boxy rolling case and walked up to the large window, looking upon the gunboat, which her reading up on her new posting had told her was affectionately known as L'Ânesse, or, The Donkey, by her former crews. She smiled, her first posting as an Executive Officer.

Her large violet eyes took in every detail of the small vessel docked outside the windows, then she caught some movement out of the corner of her eye and turned to see another woman, with the rank of Lieutenant Commander pinned to her uniform. Was this her new Commanding Officer? There would only be one lieutenant commander posted to the Donkey.

She turned to face the senior officer and stepped over, drawing herself up to her fill five foot seven. "Hello, I am Lieutenant Jenna Peel" she introduced herself, giving a brief and respectful salute to the other woman.

An anxious-looking male wearing the standard-issue Alliance Navy uniform walks into the observation gallery making sure his uniform is in perfect order and also making sure that his Ensign rank pin was placed properly. His standard military cut blonde hair showing off his jawline.

Immediately he walks to the senior officer and saluted while saying "Malik Kokabiel reporting for duty."

" - and I just need to say, 'Hello, I'm Eyd - AHHH!" Interrupted mid-murmuring to herself, the pacing woman in question leaped back in a panic. "HELLOI'MEYDISDIADOTTRANDI'MGONNABEYOURCOMMANDER!" Squeezing out every single bit of air from her lungs, Eydis quickly found herself completely breathless as she felt the crushing starvation for air overtake her chest. Heaving in air in a desperate attempt to get a breath, the wisp of a blond ended up hunching over in a coughing fit. "I'm sahrhyy - " she tried to apologize, only to cough again as her eyes teared up.

"Y-yeah," the wisp of a woman finally replied, finally managing to get a few proper breaths into her lungs. "I'm just so excited and nervous - I've just gotten my first command, and I'm waiting here for my crew...members to....arrive," her voice drifted off as realization began to settle in again after she had managed not to hack up her lungs. "H-hi. I mean, uh, at ease? Or, or - oh no, what am I supposed to say?!" their commanding officer began to panic, her self-esteem taking a rapid nose-dive.

The violet eyed lieutenant raised her eyebrows as the commander stammered through her explanation.

"Well, I am your new executive officer" Jenna said and produced her datapad containing her orders and handed it over to her new commanding officer. Maybe having her new second in command there would help her calm down? Jenna hoped so.

"R-right, sorry!" the skinny wisp of a woman replied, hunched over for a moment as she recovered. Finally standing up, she looked more fitting behind a library counter than in a military uniform, but here they were. "I am Lieutenant Commander Diadottr, and if that rings a bell, well, I'm Eydis Diadottr, not that other one," the woman briefly segued into another topic. "But anyways, let's get to our ship." Pointing the way with a hand, she then lead the way. "How much do you guys know about it though? Our ship, Gee-Ahy-Two-Six-Four-Eight?" Eydis asked the two as they walked through the docking umbilical. "If you guys let me know, I can fill in the blanks," their commander offered.

Though initially awkward and wracked with anxiety, the tall, wispy blonde seemed she had calmed down. At least for the time being.

"I don't know much about our new ship, but I believe I heard that this ship has a name besides Gee-Ahy-Two-Six-Four-Eight, not quite sure what said name was though." Malik replied looking curiously at the "new" ship.

"Harrier class Heavy Gunboat number 2648, which is the official name, Ensign, affectionately nicknamed 'The Donkey' by her first operating crew. Up to thirty five crew, armed with laser cannons, four torpedoes and a heavy spinal mount laser cannon. Designed to operate as a forward scout, attack ship and commerce escort." Jenna rattled off the details she knew about the vessel. While she had not served aboard a Harrier before, but her previous postings, the cruisers Essex and Repulse had operated along side them and the modular Peregrine class heavy gunboats.

She walked along side the Commander and Ensign to the docking tunnel that allowed them to cross over from the station to the small starship on the other side. The long brightly lit tunnel stretched out before them, terminating in the round blue armored airlock door in the Donkey's hull.

Walking up, she had taken in the spazz attack the CO had. Shrugging she fell in with the rest of the crew as they started into the docking tunnel. As the XO started listing off information about the ship, Rebeeka Starkicker thought back on what she had read on the ship. She had studied up on everything about the troidial fusion reactor, and the ships main drives VASIMR. She was about to bring this up but she wasn't sure she wanted to take the stage from the XO and the CO.

"O-oh, nevermind," Eydis awkwardly replied, beaten to the punch by her XO, briefly nodding to Rebeeka as she arrived. "Well, I at least have some trivia about The Donkey," the blonde replied, making sure her hair bun was in place. "The previous crew actually just up and vanished," the Commander explained. As the air-locks opened, she lead the way, the complete absence of any new-car-smell making it clear that this was not a new ship. "There's been lots of space-ghost stories and conspiracy theories around too. They're actually pretty nuts!" she laughed. "But for all we know, they all quit and just didn't want us chasing them down because of the ship," Eydis shrugged. "Anyways, you guys want a quick tour?" she asked, warming up to them all.

"Vanished?" Jenna asked, raising her gold eyebrows at the thought of an entire Alliance starship crew just up and vanishing, especially the thought of them deserting did not sit well at the pit of the Lieutenant's stomach. "I had not read anything about that in the files I had on the ship's history" she added with a frown as they stepped through the big round hatch into the Donkey's airlock.

The small airlock, which was mirrored on the other side of the narrow A-deck hull, was a small brightly lit room, who's for and aft walls were lined with supply cabinets and space suit lockers. A second large round airlock hatch was on the inboard wall, which lead into the ships main A-deck passageway. The inner door was open.

"I would be more than happy to have a tour as well" Jenna said and smiled.

Shocked, Rebeeka followed the group. She had never read anything about the ship that would lead her to believe the whole previous crew had disappeared. Knowing it might be something imported for her to figure out more about, she made a mental note to do some research on it once she got to her quarters.

Shifting her duffel to her right hand, she looked around at the ship through the loading tube's window. With a low whistle she smiled, knowing this was going to be fun.

"Our assignment is going to be pretty low level stuff," Eydis began, brushing back a few stray strands of straw-yellow hair as she made her way through the airlock. "You know. Um. Scanning shipping containers. Escorting vessels..." the excitement drained from her voice in embarrassment. "It's not much, but it's a start, right guys?" the Commander tried to awkwardly smile. "As for the rumors, well they're just rumors ok? Sorry I didn't say that to begin with," the woman grimaced. "I'm sure this ship wasn't found just drifting through space as a ghost ship!"

"A-anyways. The arrangement for the ship is pretty standard. Over here, we have the recreation and mess hall area." Departing the airlock section of the ship, she entered a space that was all too familiar with any military personnel. "I know it doesn't look any different than most multi-purpose rooms, because, well, it isn't. The tables and chairs inside can all fold away and be replaced with other objects as needed," she admitted sheepishly. "I know it's no sim-deck, but smaller vessels, you know? This is towards the nose of the ship. Unimportant stuff up front, important stuff in back," the woman spoke, some of her confidence having returned now that she was simply explaining things to them. "Oh, let me show you to our quart - Ahhh! Our quarters are the other way!"

Ducking out, she ran back the way they came.

Following along Rebeeka was excited to hear about seeing their cabins, she really did want to drop her duffel off in hers. Once that was taken care of she would follow along before dropping out of the tour at the engine room. She wanted to start doing a work up and making sure things as they should be and if they weren't she wanted to get on them so that when it was time to pump the gas pedal they could.

As the Captain rushed buy zipping towards the crew quarters, Beeks had to laugh, the youthful exuberance was an interesting mix with command. Quickly she stiffed her laugh and hid it with a cough.

"O-oh, right," Eydis slowed down. "I just realized, I should have brought you guys to your quarters first so you could drop your stuff off. I'm really sorry!" the commander apologized, turning to lead the way "Anyways, going past the other way, we have the main vertical shaft. It's an open lift and ladders, so watch your step. We're not big enough to have a central shaft with stairs and all that, so get your cardio in!" the wisp of a woman awkwardly flexed her bicep. Realizing how silly she looked, she blushed and continued onwards. "Past that, we have crew cabins here on A Deck. Not ours though! We're on B Deck. Either way, they're decent sized rooms considering what we have to work with." Despite not stopping, a disk shaped drone scooted out from a slot in the wall before coming to an expectant stop, hoping for their luggage. "From here, engineering isn't far off at all. In fact, it's practically right there down the hall," Eydis explained. As the doors opened, they were greeted by the thrum of the reactors, its many maintenance drones floating about to aid the small crew in keeping the ship running. "There's a lift and ladder here too, so let's go to Deck B from here," she suggested.

At her beckoning, they descended into the depths of engineering, and what was possibly the largest and most important compartment in the entire ship. Just from where they were at, they could see that it spanned all three decks, with numerous monitoring stations, access ways, ladders and so forth to facilitate the crew getting to what they needed to get. "Now, outside engineering is where our actual quarters are at!" Eydis happily informed them. Stepping out, they soon realized that their quarters were just a stone's throw away, just as she had said. "We get to be on the same deck as the bridge, since in an emergency, we gotta be there pronto! Go ahead and put your luggage down, the drones will take care of that. We gotta get to the medbay first." Just as before, another drone slid out of the wall, patiently waiting for them to drop off whatever luggage they had. Perhaps unexpectedly, Eydis took a quick turn and entered through another door to the side. "The medbay's right here too," she began. "It's a really cozy ship, so everything's close by. In a pinch, it can care for over a dozen people, and also act as our science-lab too." Sheepishly looking back at them, she added, "Let's not go in - I don't like visiting the doctor's," she tried to awkwardly grin at them.

"I'll save the most important bit for last, right now, let's go down to C Deck!" Trying to slide down the nearby ladder, but squeaking to a stop a few times thanks to her sweaty hands, Eydis eventually got down safely and spread her arms. "H-here it is!" the commander began, her face beginning to turn red. "T-this long, thick b-bad boy runs the majority of the - ok, ok I'm sorry! I tried, ok! It's just the main gun!" Eydis melted down with embarrassment at her failed innuendos. "I just wanted to sound like the Admiral!"

For a good, long, awkward moment, nobody really said anything it seemed, leaving things up to the awkward Commander to continue her tour. "A-anyways, there's not much else on C Deck besides the cannon and storage spaces," Eydis tried to regain some of her dignity. "Um. Let's go back to B Deck," she tried to usher them along. Climbing up the ladder, she added, "There's a few other things here on B Deck like the torpedo tubes..." her voice trailed off. "But, I don't think we really need to see those right now." Given her earlier embarrassment though, it was understandable. She didn't need to on about the long, phallic objects that the ship could launch. Moments after getting off the ladders though, she lead them to another door that they hadn't entered before. Letting out a sigh, Eydis entered the small, compact room and plopped down on the central chair. The other seats were all arranged around it, close together and with only enough room to walk between each. "Oh," she remembered.

"Welcome to the bridge. Tour's over," the commander dourly added, bummed out by her earlier embarrassment. "You guys ready for launch?"

"WHAT?!?!" Beeks replied to the question of launching. Ma'am please give me ten minutes to make sure everything is ready back in the engine...ro..." Her voice faded as she she took off to race to Engineering. Racing down the ladders not rung by rung, but sliding down them feet off the the side to slow her to a safe speed, "Oh hecks I should have ditched the tour when we were in there." She muttered to herself as she raced through the doors to where the power core resided.

"Ok folks." She spoke to the bots and the techs in the large area. "The err... Ol' Lady? wants the ship to launch. I know I didn't get a chance to met you all past when we pasted through quickly earlier, but lets get this piggy kicked!" She chimed off and started ordering the techs and bots through a pre launch check list making sure everything was ready.

The halls of the small ship suddenly started to echo with what sounded like heavy footfalls, slapping into the metallic deck with a rhythmic clop, clop, clop sound. There was a rush of pressurized air driven forward as the speedy new arrival jumped up a service ladder, and suddenly appeared at the entrance door to the bridge.

The six foot tall woman with ruddy Taianese features was panting a bit as she reached up to steady a leather cowboy hat that had nearly fallen off. It was then one noticed the fact there was a pair of animalistic reddish-brown ear tips poking out of it. In fact, once the dust settled, the source of the strange sound became more clear... as below the waist of the standard issue blue Alliance naval uniform was instead a pair of muscular horse's legs, complete with hooves and a short tail, standing at attention for the commander.

"Sorry ah'm late for the tour, ma'am. Always gettin' lost in them big spaceports," began the Ensign with a thick New Texan drawl, "Name's Josie Chitu Windrustler, weapons officer. Right nice to be of service." The horse-hybrid then gave a warm grin and a tip of the brim of her hat to the waify captain.

There was a pause before Josie pointed a thankfully very human thumb behind her, "I heard the engineer going on about kickin' some piggies down there. Guess we're fixin' to send this old donkey up?"

After handing her things over to the assistant robot, Jenna followed the Captain to the ship's small bridge. The command center was small and cramped in comparison to the bridge of her last assignment, but it had the same white/blue/gray color scheme and was comfortably lit. The stations that were packed into the small compartment were all in standby, their screens dark, control panels awaiting input from their operators.

"I think we can be set to go in short order" Jenna replied to the Captain's question as she maneuvered past the command station and slid into the seat behind the forward right hand control station, with the word **NAV** glowing dully on it's otherwise dark screen. Besides being the Executive Officer, Lieutenant Jenna Peel was also the navigator and those duties doubled on top of her command responsibilities. A small ship like the Donkey did not have the room for the XO to just sit beside the Captain. They had to earn their keep by doing multiple jobs.

The control console arranged before Jenna was a combination of sleek ultra modern technology and tried and true hardware that would not fail. Unlike man civilian ships and pleasure craft, the controls were tactile. Buttons, switches, levers, etc. Simple things that would not fail. Redundancy and durability were the name of the game in a military vessel. As she flicked her stations *"on"* switch, she glanced at the yet unoccupied helm station on her left, which even had a control yoke and throttles like one might find on a starfighter.

The green and amber displays on her station flickered on as diagnostic information from the main computer scrolled up the screens, giving her the status of the navicomputer and all systems under the purview of the navigation officer. Jenna typed in her pre-uploaded command code and additional data due the executive officer came up on a secondary display. She tapped in another command which brought the forward wraparound viewscreen online, the image of space and the dockyard outside the ship slowly fading in on the big screen.

It was then the weapons officer entered the bridge and introduced herself and Jenna turned away from her station to glance at the newcomer with a welcoming smile.

Sunk into the commander's chair, Eydis took a deep breath and rubbed her temples as she tried to calm herself down and get over her embarrassment.

"Hey, no rush to launch," she turned in her seat to call after Beeks. "It's not like we're the IAS Enterprise or something!" Letting out another sigh, she looked at the bridge crew. "Or, maybe we should treat this like something special? It's our first time after all," the commander realized. She then realized what that last bit really sounded like and immediately started turning red. "I'm gonna shut up now," she moaned, sinking into her chair. However, it didn't seem like she had a moment's rest, her ears perking up the moment she heard a steady 'Clop, Clop, Clop' come closer and closer. Blinking at the others for a moment, she turned around and glanced at the entrance, only to drop her jaw. "Whaaaaaaat?!" she exclaimed in shock. "I knew you converted over to being Taianese, but! But! The profile only showed you from shoulders up!" Eydis then realized how racist that might have sounded. "Er - I mean, welcome! Oh...I really screwed up," she murmured, half-hiding behind the tall back of her command chair. Peering over it at Josie. "We're about to launch, so go ahead and grab your seat," she gestured to the weapons station.

Settling back into her chair, eyes forward at the display, a holographic panel popped to life by Beeks in engineering to include her on the bridge. "Systems check. Is everyone ready?" Eydis managed to ask with some authority at last.

Smiling through the display, Beeks waved. "We are ready here.... Errr WAIT!!!" She looked panicked and turned looking around Engineering from tech to tech. "I'm forgetting something what is it?!" She asked as each of the techs looked to each other and raced their eyes over their checklists, each and everyone of them shrugged and shook their heads, everything was green in their eyes.

Her eyes darted through the whole of the room looking for the one thing she missed. Once her gaze moved over the power core she knew exactly what she forgot. "Oh durr..." She smacked her forehead and raced over to the core. leaning over the safety rails she licked the core's outershell. "There you go baby now let's kick this pig!!!"

Her techs all looked back and forth confused for a moment, and of coarse the video feed on the bridge had tracked her and her actions. The whole ship now knew she licked the power core, and in her mind claimed it.

Josie flashed a winning smile at the XO in return, before she let out a good laugh at the Eydis' uncomfortable situation when the dossier didn't quite prepare her for Ensign Windrustler's more unique hindquarters. "Ah'm used to it by now, ma'am. Don't get your knickers in a knot over it," reassured the Taianese, as she slipped over to the weapons station and took up her position with confidence. "I might be half mare, but ah'm all warhorse in a scrap."

Just as she was getting cozy and doing the pre-flight checklists of the various armaments the Harrier-class gunboat had equipped (while also subtly wishing that these seats were built for a wider variety of body shapes), the view of Beeks in engineering popped up and soon gave her an eyeful of the power core licking. "Well she sure'n looks happier than a dead pig in the sunshine... or a half brick short of a load," quipped Josie with some New Texan wisdom, as she made sure all protective subsystems were indeed showing green to the Lt. Commander.

Malik slightly overwhelmed by all of the happenings turned to the newcomer "Welcome my name is Malik Kokabiel nice to meet you." he then walks to his seat and says "So long as nobody is sick I think im good to go."

Jenna returned her attention to her navigation console, tapping in a few commands to bring up the status report from the engineering system monitor, which showed power levels rising and the sublight engines and hyperspace drive warming up. She added this info to her growing list of systems she was keeping an eye on as the heavy gunboat came to life.

Next she brought up the nav plot and star charts, cross referencing the information she had and updating from the local navigation beacons and carrier signals, which quickly fine tuned the Donkey's navigational calibration and firmly and accurately fixed her location on the charts.

Jenna glanced to her left at the helmsman, who was busy working at their own station, getting ready to pilot the gunboat out of dock, then took a breath, returning her gaze to her own board, as the last of her status lights winked green.

"Nav ready for destination input" Jenna said as her system rolled over to a ready status, a new window popping up on her screen, awaiting input to begin plotting a course.

"Aww geeze, that's gross!" Eydis exclaimed. "I can't imagine myself licking the reactor core!" the commander's face contorted, tongue sticking out as though she had a foul taste in her mouth. Shaking her head to try and clear her imaginary palate, the the wisp of a woman looked back over to her new weapons officer. "Well, she's able to give out a few good kicks and then some. Definitely more firepower than our lighter siblings, since L'Ânesse is a Heavy Gunship. I hope you like what you see," she smiled at Josie, before trying to reassure their medical officer. "Hey, not every day you launch for the first time in your ship right? The bridge is the safest place in the ship, probably even safer than the medbay," Eydis shot him a thumbs up. "Just relax and let us do the work!" Finally taking a breath, now that the moment had come, she gave the order. "Alright helm, decouple and launch. Ease us out of port and into a holding position near the designated jump point."

And with that, the docking clamps released without them so much as noticing, only for the station to start sliding away as their ship began to pull off. Turning her nose around, the view from L'Ânesse soon became nothing but a field of stars.

"Hm. Maybe I made too big a deal about this," Eydis murmured to herself. Thinking about it, wasn't going to FTL a larger concern? With a bit more thought, the wispy blond suddenly sat ramrod straight in her chair. "Oh! That's right! There's a few issues we can help out with!" she began. "We got three to pick from." Quickly tapping away at her display, she soon forwarded the info to everyone else. "So with the first one, the IAS Excelsior was attacked by some sort of huge monster when it was setting up a prefab base in an asteroid field. They killed it, but could only leave a skeleton crew to take preliminary samples and such because some Union ships started passing by the neighboring area. We just gotta help out with sample collection and give them a ride back." Swiping the screen again, the image of a deep space monitoring station popped up. "That station is broadcasting at its regular intervals but it's all mostly garbled. They're trying to reply to central's hails too, and the bits that are getting through say they're fine, but the brass wants us to stop by." Finally, she swiped the image again and made a sour face. "Bleh. Do you guys seriously wanna cover someone else's patrols so they can go do one of the other things? I think the guys on patrol don't wanna poke the space-whale corpse or do a house call on that station," she remarked.

Turning to look at the missions. "I say the second one." Malik replied while turning back to the commander. "A nice and simple way to start out."

"Well, skipper, checking on the relay station is probably a good idea, I'm sure command would feel better knowing it was working properly, and if it's not we can fix it, or make sure no one has been tampering with it?" Jenna added her two cents as she checked the nav data for both targets. "I am sure the Excelsior will be back for their people soon enough, though I guess if we need too, we could sweep by, grab them and then check on the relay station?" she suggested.

The weapons officer was admiring the view of the starfield for awhile, feeling better when they finally hit open space. When the matter of choosing an objective came up, her brown horse-styled ears twitched for a moment as she considered the options, before speaking again to the captain in her drawl. "I don't know about you, ma'am, but as peachy as it would be to rescue them folks who wrangled a space monster with these here heavy guns, I don't want to cause no diplomatic trouble gettin' in a dustup right out the gate with them Gartagen fellers, neither." Josie then gave a quick laugh. " Besides, with ol' Lickers downstairs I bet she could fix up that malfunctioning array right quick. That might leave us some time if'n the Excelsior's stranded away team still needs bailing out?"

"OH MY GOSH!!! THE HUGE MONSTER!!!!" Beeks cried out at the option. She had been busy looking over screens making sure things were ready for the ship to leave the docking. Past that She also had a few data chips she needed to install into a few of the drones in Engineering. while totally not official, it was a time honored tradition to have an still aboard for distilling grains into good old fashion boosemohol. Clear as the air, and as strong as a battleship's hull plating, great for degreasing parts, and lubing crew members after hard missions.

She knew perfectly well that if the Captain found out and didn't believe in the unofficial traditions of the Navy she could be looking at time in the brig, or even loss of rank. But she had never had or seen issues before in her career.

As the others made their wants clear, Eydis counted who was voting for what in perhaps the oldest way possible. Counting on her fingers. Fortunately, she didn't have to use her toes, nor realize just how silly she looked.

"Well, chances are, I think someone will eventually pick up the other jobs before we finish whatever one we go with," their commander began, tallying off who wanted what. "Plus....it looks like most of us wanna go do that house call," she pointed out, a little relieved. "Maybe that's for the best though. The thought of having to help the scientists they left behind with the dead space whale thing or whatever kinda creeps me out," the slender woman admitted. "All stations, prepare for jump. Weapons, divert power to propulsion," Eydis began. "Medical, secure all equipment. Engineering, spin up the drive. And Nav, set point for Far Poi - wait, seriously?" she stopped in disbelief, looking at them all in bewilderment. "....Far Point Station 5. This is really unoriginal. Ugh." Rubbing her temples, she raised a hand and made a chopping motion towards the screen. "Just engage."

Some Time Later

"Hey guys, there's an alcohol brewery in engineering!" Eydis shouted, storming into the officer's mess as they all ate lunch. "I found this thing in there, and at first I thought it was some sort of storage container, but then I started scanning it since it smelled funny!" the slender blonde explained. "That's like, against regs! We gotta toss it out or something!" The trip was going to take some time no matter how they cut it, and in that time, the commander had been inspecting every single nook and cranny of her first ship. Ever. "Heheh...hahaha. Oh no, oh no, oh no, if they find out - " she nervously tittered, already frightened at the idea.

Wringing her hands for a moment, Eydis' eyes darted about the room, only for her to dart for the emergency tool locker. Pulling out a giant axe-shaped bulkhead cutter, she started to storm out of the mess, her intentions all too clear.

Lieutenant Jenna Peel was quite enjoying her black current scones and tea when the Captain came barging in, raging about some alcohol related contraption in the engine room. The sudden change in demeanor was stricking, shocking even, causing Jenna to drop her scone on the small plate sitting on the table before her as her eyes tracked her commanding officer ranting her way across the mess, to a damage control storage locker, where she produced an large emergency tool, then stormed out.

"Oh shi-" Jenna darted out of her seat and was scrambling across the compartment and out the door into the passage just moments after Commander Eydis.

"Skipper! Hold on!" she called after her CO as she sprinted after the blond woman.

As she watched the Captain grab the ax and head towards engineering, Beeks' eyes popped wide before standing and spilling her food across the floor in a mad dash towards the hatch the captain just raced out of. Charging after, Rebeeka leaned into her run until she was just behind the captain. With a last push of her toes off the deck she flung herself forward to tackle the captain and started to attempt to wrestle away the bulkhead cutter.

Weapons officer Windrustler was in the mess along with the other crew off shift, enjoying a well-balanced meal before they would be at their objective. The gene modded equine human was savoring the crunch of a nice helping of nearly raw whole carrots on the side of her plate a little too much, when she noticed the captain coming barging in spouting off about finding an illegal still in engineering. Now she wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but Josie knew they used things like that to home brew all the time back home... but on a ship like this the rules were a lot different than a frontier ranch. "Boy, she looks madder than a wet hen," commented the Ensign at the sight of their little blond CO reaching for a ax-like bulkhead cutter with murder in her eyes, but the mood changed markedly when suddenly the XO Jenna and Beeks both dropped what they were doing and raced after her into the corridor as well to stop the contraband from being smashed.

"Aw hell," Josie sighed a moment, as she knew what the right thing to do was... those lovely, long, orange veggies had to wait. She straightened her cowboy hat for a second while rising up out of her seat and pushing it in with a hooved foot. The Horse-Form Taianese soon started to close the distance to the impending scuffle outside the mess with a dramatic two-legged trot, big sister vibes kicking into gear... she had experience breaking up her fair share of fights among all her siblings, so hopefully her higher-ups wouldn't want things to get ugly over some space-age moonshine before the mission barely got started.

While Malik was sitting quietly eating his Potato soup and beef tips the captain ran in like a madwoman yelling something about a moonshine distillery completely throwing Malik for a loop. Suddenly she went for an ax and ran out of the room. Now Malik just had to see that.

So as the captain ran out of the room Malik stood up and ran after his new equine crew member to watch the show.

In an instant, chair feet slid and screeched across the floor, other seats simply toppling as people hurried to rise. Meanwhile, food splattered across the ground as disk-shaped cleaning drones quickly appeared, worriedly trying to clean the mess. Feet clamored across the hard ship deck while hooves clopped, voices rising in exclamations of shock. But nothing was more deafening than the loud, fleshy SMACK of someone landing on the floor face first. "GHAAAAAAAHAAAA!" Eydis cried out, her frantic eyes tear stricken as her nose started to turn red, then purple. "I don't wanna lose my commission! Lemmi gooooo!" the scrawny woman cried out. Digging the rubberized handle of the large, two handed, hull-cutter axe, the meek looking Eydis began to drag herself forward across the floor despite having been tackled by Rebeeka. "My baby! My first ship! I don't wanna lose my baby!"

Something heavy and metallic thudded down the nearby followed by a resounding DONK. The gavel-hammer impact could almost be mistaken for something smashing against the ship but it came from within, down the corridor, inside the armoury. It was followed by the sound of a pair of doors sliding open and an awkward silence.

Those with sharper senses however might have detected something unusual; light footsteps and a wet, almost dirt-like smell in the wake of rain. Soon, a shadow loomed and was followed by the strangest member of the ship so far.

It didn't look like it belonged here. It was too grotesque, too profane a combination of alien technologies and biologies, too segmented, seemingly fleshless, and subsequently its chitinous mask-face and the strange collection of mandibles and the maw behind them all too primordial and bestial for such a comparatively high tech ship.

Somehow, in spite of its eight foot frame it moved with a wraith-like silence and speed. One long, freakishly long, multi-segmented arm ending in harsh claws stretched out, seemingly growing out of its body and towards the neck of the axe, aiming to clench it tight and yank it out of her hands.

"I do not hope to be writing a report later that our commander has been compromised." Came its grating buzz-saw voice, the words somehow recognizable within their sheen of horrid distortion. "But do elaborate, fellow crew."

Like most big insects, their head of security didn't show up until he was least expected, and right up close. Which, of course, instantly gave the crew flashbacks of the very first time their commander had been introduced to him.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIiiiii - reAlly nnEed that Ahhxe tHoUgh!" Eydis managed to speak, her scream of primal fear that harkened back to humankind's earliest years abating just enough for her to begin speaking. Still clinging hard onto her end of the axe shaped hull cutter, her legs were held down by Beeks, while her front end was lifted by the alien insect. But even then, she went on as though nothing was out of place. "Someone set up an alcohol distillery in engineering," their commander began to explain, her demeanor now somehow straight laced and by the books as she stared at the bug. "That's against regulations, and if central find out, we'll be reprimanded, or worse - we might lose the ship and be put on punishment duties," she tried reasoning. "You have to go to engineering and smash that distillery Trevor!" Looking back at the rest of the crew behind her, Eydis added, "You all know what you gotta do!"

Finally pulling the bulkhead ax from her commanding officer Rebeeka looked up at the incest that appeared. "There is no need It is my domain and as such I'll handle it." She took a deep breath and stood up using the ax as if it was a cane. As she finally caught her breath she reached down to help the Captain up.

"Ma'am the still... it is mine, I use it to brew up a de-greaser. Also if you ask around, quietly, to your fellow commanders of other ships, you'll find they exist, and well are used regularly." she smiled and sighed hoping this would curb the Commander's murderous desire.

Josie hustled her way forward before the wave of the crew members started rising up behind to get an eyeful ofthe drama, though stopped her near gallop short when she reached the fallen commander. The fact their hulking head of security had skittered out from his post to intervene directly really drove home the point that things had to be muzzled right quick, as she wasnt all that trusting of his methods being gentle on Eydis.

Ensign Windrustler offered a helping hand to the fallen captain, getting her up and off the cold deck floor before the human stampede of gawkers came on through. When the engineer spoke, the Taianese woman knew exactly what she was getting at; reinforcing the cover story was the best way to go.. "Ma'am, Beeks is right... why, down on the ranch we used that stuff all the time. Better solvent than that watered down gunk they sold in the general store. Can only imagine the uses for it on a big ol' starship." Josie tried to add a little New Texan charm as she flicked one of her horse ears. "Now, how's about we stop worrying 'bout callin' a spade a shovel and get back to our grub?"
