Chapter 09: Do the Dinosaur

With one disaster after another, the crew of the Edward Deming are stretched thin after another incident places their friends and family in danger...Some will go to great lengths to achieve their goals, though others may not be so eager to make a Faustian bargain.

Chapter 09: Do the Dinosaur

Post by uso » Sat Jan 26, 2019 10:28 pm

IAS Edward Deming,
Private Meeting room,

Heram moved from one meeting to the next, working his way through his packed schedule.

This time, it would be the Konglong ambassador.

Unlike the others who were dressed in their military finery, their people's elaborate traditional clothing, or were simply so inhuman they didn't need clothing quite in the same way, Heram seemed fairly mundane. He was only human after all, the muted colors of his suit-jacket not having the same air of importance as most.

The smaller private diplomatic rooms off to the sides of the main meeting area for the summit were meant to hold a small group of people. Though for some of the larger creatures the rooms could seem a bit small. Heram himself remained standing, rather than making use of the sofas along the walls.

"Thank you for meeting with me,

I think we didn't get a real chance to hear from the Konglong, and I wanted to give everyone some personal attention. The goal here isn't just to strengthen the international community, but to also strengthen the one on one ties.

I was hoping you could share the goals of the Konglong, and we can see what we can work on together for mutual benefit."

Míngliàng de yáchǐ'

After spending a short time in their shuttle, Míngliàng de yáchǐ' and her Xùnměng lóng assistant/bodyguard, entered the small meeting room they had been invited to. Míng was already sick of most of the ambassadors at the summit. She had been close to walking out and leaving Duǎn bǎoxiǎnsī in her place. The Xùnměng probably would have just ended up biting the other diplomats. The thought caused Bright Tooth to smile as she stood before Heram. She stood a half foot taller than the man before her, bowing she spoke in her lilt alto voice, "Thank you for inviting me to your side meeting." She stood back up right and motioned to her assistant. "I hope you didn't mind me bringing along my assistant along. I was under orders not to be outside my shuttle without her."

Listening to Herams comments she nodded. "Seems you all have taken from the fact my peoples rarely leaving our territories as a sign that we are a weak and trivial faction in our galactic neighborhood. I could call the worldship that brought me and have it launch the few warships it brought within itself. Not many mind you, only half of a worldship's protection fleet." She walked over to a display and plugged in an universal adapter one of the tech's had rigged up for her. the display started showing images of five Battleship grade ships, floating within the belly of the Worldship's harbor, surrounded with their escort force. Each Battleship could be measured a kilometer in length.

She quickly looked from the screen to Heram. "This is by no means, a threat or an expression of the intent of aggression. It is proof that was I was offering the parties of the armistice, was something of real power and strength." Sighing she left the display and looked back at her assistant.

"The main reason I was sent by my peoples with the powers I have, was to simply get one important priority secured. Trade." She smiled and turned back to Heram. "While I believe that it is possible that we can secure such things here, I am worried the so called power players in that room are to busy chasing their own tails and trying to look the biggest."

Everyone was out here bringing their battleships, cruisers, and other assorted military finery.

Wazu might have felt sheepish if he was the type of person to be embarrassed about showing up in an old workhorse like the Edward Deming. A large part of this ship was just planetary survey gear. If anyone had to make a map of something from orbit, he'd certainly show up everyone here!

"Well. If it makes you feel any better, I don't have any real power. I'm not worried about displays of force or squabbling over minutia.

I like to think I work well with back channels. If it is a trade agreement with the Alliance you're looking for I can certainly get something on the books with the Alliance Ambassador. Is there a particular set of products or equipment that you're looking to trade? Or are you wanting to establish a more blanket trade deal?"

"Blanket," Ming nodded. "Though I'm not sure what good back channels would be," She shrugged her over-sized shoulders, "I'm not even clear what they would be." She spoke sweetly and innocently, as if she truly didn't know what he was meaning. And it was quite the possibility that it was true.

"As for what we would like to trade, we don't have much in the way of mining, even though we have great forges that we can create strong ships and vehicles. Past mined minerals, most trade goods would be grand. Everything from textiles to new spices."

Ming took a deep breath. "As for what we can export... We have quite efficient farming techniques. Planets devoted to the harvest of grains, fruits, vegetables, even legumes." Her bright white teeth flashed with a smile. "We also have game planets where we keep raise and hunt free ranged animals."

"I believe what I am saying is as long as it is a surplus resource, we are willing to trade it. The only thing that will not ever be on the table is weapons, Warships, and combat armors."

"Consider it as unofficial diplomacy." Wazu explained, "Here the tone is more casual. We can work on developing a relationship and establishing an overall intent. I find it helps later when it comes time for the more legal aspects of negotiation. I can speak to the Official Alliance Ambassador regarding what you're looking for in a trade treaty so that we can go into actual negotiations with some paperwork to discuss. I don't imagine there will be an issue with the exchange of raw materials and food.

You wouldn't happen to have local cooking programs and other media regarding how to prepare your local vegetation?"

"I see." Ming responded to the comment about unofficial diplomacy. It wasn't something she was all that informed about. The Konglong believed in everything up front, why lie about your intentions, when being upfront about them usually brought both sides to a conclusion they both could be pleased with.

"This would be grand, I believe my peoples would be overwhelmed with excitement on imports coming in to give them better tastes of the cultures around us." She smiled again as she thought about the cooking shows. "We have a few, I think per worldship. I'll have to get back to you on that, some looking up..."

She was interrupted by the raptor assistant. "Excuse me Ma'am, but there is a good one on the world ship that brought us here, the chiefs name is, Fěicuì cǎo. He is the one that uses the spice gun and yells, 'ZAP!' when he does. Overly excited and a bit flashy but he does cover a wide ranges of foods."

Though a hair irritated about being interrupted Ming was delighted she had an answer so easily. "Well there you go, I can make arrangements to have his show's recordings uploaded to who ever is interested in trade deals with us."

"That sounds like a great start. Is there anything else you want to discuss or should I get started on a more formal offer?" Wazu Offered.

"Yes one last issue I would like to discuss, but it would be with the Queeniepoo of the Ersetu." Ming states without emotion, though her assistant hissed behind her at the mention of the horned race. "Nothing violent just a few grievances that I would like to air with her. Quite possibly something can be done easily about it."

"I am certain I can arrange for a meeting with her as well. If you'll excuse me, I'll get that setup for you." Heram said, about to head for the door before adding, "And I'll pass along my contact information. If you do need something, or just want to keep in touch, feel free to reach out. I'll see what I can do to help."

With that, he would make a direct path towards the Alliance Ambassador who was still out among the others in the main area.

---

"Do you have a short moment to talk?" Wazu asked, coming up beside the ambassador once he had an opening. "The Konglong are interested in an official trade agreement, and I think to continue with them we would need to have a framework already in mind that could be discussed."

The approach itself was rather abrupt. But there was little about Wazu that suggested he liked wasting time.

Ambassador Pullings turned his attention to Wazu, raising an eyebrow. He had to take a moment to switch gears from one subject to the new one. "Yes, we had some idea that they would be wanting to open trade negotiations between the Alliance and the Konglong" he said with a slight nod.

"We have multiple base trade agreement structures that can be drawn upon, but I would like to talk with their ambassador and know what his government would like out of a trade agreement between our governments before we choose a starting framework."

"It looks like they are interested in a blanket free trade agreement, though they have expressed interest in acquiring raw materials, selling food along with other biological, and banning weapon sales from their empire. I am not aware if the intention is to also ban weapon sales from us to them, but I would leave that discussion to you."

Heram would give it a bit of consideration before adding, "Perhaps start with banning of weapon sales just to be on the safe side. They seem somewhat unhappy about the posturing between some of the major nations. It encouraged them to flex their own capabilities by deploying some more combat ships to this area. I think if we can show that we are above that sort of thing it will help us in the long term."

Sitting down in a chair, Ming sighed and looked across the table to her assistant who was standing by the door. "What do you think? Will we be going back to our people with warnings of wars and the need to fortify our borders?"

Duǎn bǎoxiǎnsī nodded, "We might, but I think once the blood is splattered the Ersetu, I believe, will become good trade partners. You just need to be careful about them dragging us into their battles."

"I know, I know... But if we are to find pack-mates in the sector it might be necessary to ally yourself closer than we might like to."

"That is true Ming, but just remember that we might have all of the military strength to defend our spaces from most folks, we can't do that and bring war to others."

With a sigh Ming knew that the truth was right there. Sure the Konglong could send a Worldship and it's forces out to help keep the peace, they just couldn't fight a large scale war. Not that she was going to let anyone in on that fact.

Pullings nodded as he listened to Wazu. "Well, I am sure we can work something out between our peoples" he said.

"If they want to further peaceful relations between our people and theres the Alliance is game"

"I will leave you to it then. There are still a few more connections I need to make before the summit is concluded." Wazu replied, quickly moving on to his next task.
